Fresh herbs include fennel, dill, and chives. A key focus of this diet is that it emphasizes the choosing of seasonal local and organic produce while greatly minimizing wastage.1 While the Nordic diet is seen to have a large number of key similarities with the Mediterranean diet, there are a number of differences such as the fact that as opposed to the use of olive oil, the Nordic diet relies on rapeseed (canola oil). Canola oil has been noted to have more heart-healthy omega-3 acids in addition to also having a lower amount of saturated fat as compared to the olive oil that is used in the Mediterranean diet.

In addition to this, the two diets also differ in the type of products that make up the two diets, this factor is simply a reflection of the differences of the Nordic and Mediterranean regions in climate, soil, and water. Another difference between the Nordic diet and the Mediterranean diet in that unlike the Mediterranean diet with tends to allow for individuals to consume pasta, white bread and polenta, the Nordic diet makes a point of shunning the consumption of all processed foods and refined gains.

1 The Nordic diet has been credited with focusing on foods that are rich in fiber and protein both of which are required by the body to help it in keeping it full from one meal to the other. The diet has also been noted to be quite satisfying and is primarily based on the foods that are currently in season and this allows for the foods in the diet to not only be filling as they are available in large quantities, the foods also taste better as a result of their being in season. The Nordic diet has been seen to have a number of health benefits.
