Relationship of Cigarette Smoking and Heart disease and Strokes - Term Paper Example

I used questionnaires to collect data regarding teen smoking to know what age teens start smoking and the correlation of teen smoking with gender and other influences.My study is on Middle School students (ages 12-14 yrs), High School students, (ages 15-18 yrs), and those in Universities (ages 18-19 ) in Bahrain. I chose to use this method because my research is targeting the teen population. My survey gave me an observation of how teenagers think of trying out smoking at an early age. People are more truthful in filling up their questionnaires regarding controversial issues like teen smoking because their responses are anonymous.

Gender – the hypothesis is that boys will most likely take up smoking than girls and will continue to smoke later on in life.Family and Friends – the hypothesis is that teens who have more family members or friends who smoke will more likely start smoking and continue smoking habits.I have also researched through the internet, books, different articles, statistics, and observations about teen smoking. I have made charts and graphs to illustrate the survey results and draw different conclusions from them.

Graphing is a method used for data collecting, and a map is a picture that shows a relationship between two quantities. It can reveal patterns and trends or summarize information. Graphs may be a pie, bar, line or scatterplot, etc. This chart is handy when you want to compare the subgroups within a group. Each bar group represents a particular age. Within the group bar, separate bars are used to describe data for males and females. You will find high and low values comparing age and gender regarding what age teenagers start smoking.

The highest bar sets at the age of 14, with male gender, were the highest in smoking. This shows graphically that regardless of age, men are more likely to be current smokers than are women.
