Download file to see previous pages Studies have been conducted from all over the country and most used cross-sectional methodology and epidemiological investigations of autism have all been concerned with the prevalence estimation of autism (Fombonne: 2003). Autism was first identified and termed as early infantile autism by a psychiatrist at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore named Leo Kanner and for at least 30 years, the disorder was referred to as an emotional disturbance. Not until American Psychiatric Association (APA), coined autism as a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction manifested by atypical and repetitive behaviors (Turnbull, et. al. pp-330: 1995).

Autism is under the Pervasive Developmental Disorder in DSM-IV and is generally defined based on these areas: major social and interaction deficit, qualitative impairment in communication, and restricted repetitive patterns of behaviors. Children with autism are described as those having difficulty in regulating social interaction with impairment in the use of verbal and nonverbal communication that hinders them to develop social interaction. More so, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviors such that they display an apparently inflexible adherence to nonfunctional and specific routines also mark this type of disorder (DSM-IV, pp 59-60: 2000).

Few pieces of research consistently depict the pattern of behavior among children with autism. A study conducted by a team of Psychiatrists in Baltimore indicates that although a child with autism appears to be normal of physical appearance, some noticeable characteristics are already prevalent. It has been found out that children with autism are generally having difficulty in developing a relationship with people, have delayed speech acquisition (and the inability to use the speech once it is developed), and shows obsessive insistence on the sameness of routine depicting a lack of imagination as shown by repetitive patterns of behavior (Turnbull, et. al. pp-330: 1995). ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
