Various alternative treatment approaches and even counseling and psychotherapy along with the use of other medications have been discussed and the comparative effectiveness of disulfiram and other medications is also highlighted.  Several research studies proving the effectiveness of disulfiram indicate that despite being not so popular among physicians for the treatment of alcoholism, disulfiram could be effectively used for the treatment of alcoholism and would be in fact one of the most effective methods among all other pharmacological or non-pharmacological treatment approaches for alcoholism.

This thesis provides a description of the uses of disulfiram and its effectiveness as a treatment drug for alcoholism. The first part of the thesis includes a general discussion of disulfiram and other pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to alcoholism and brings out a comparative analysis of all these approaches to alcoholism and shows how the treatment with disulfiram could be more effective than the other methods. The second part of the thesis is on the literature and background review of studies dealing with the use of disulfiram in alcoholism and provides conclusive evidence on why disulfiram is one of the best and most effective treatments for alcoholism.

The methodology and analysis sections use studies and data reports on the efficacy of disulfiram and provide primary as well as secondary data for this study. These results on the use of disulfiram in treating alcohol-related disorders are then analyzed to decipher whether or when disulfiram could be used for future treatment of alcoholism.Several studies have been discussed in the literature review showing how disulfiram should fare against other forms of therapy and especially other medications such as naltrexone.

The differences between pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments could be highlighted with statistical or published quantified results and this would also be presented as primary and secondary data for this analysis.
