Family Medicine Personal Statement  Family medicine residency has definitely proved very worthwhile over the years, as all encounters with a new-fangled condition or a new patient offers a new erudition of the medical field. Family medicine residency offers great experiences that have increased my thirst for familiarity of the field. It may not be enough to merely know the means of providing treatment or making a diagnosis to a specific disease, but rather one always needs to appreciate the rationale behind assessments and decisions that one makes. No other field offers satisfaction for my inquisitiveness better than family medicine. All patients encountered in the field of family medicine offer both individual learning practice and also academic training. The inimitable opportunities provided by family medicine assist in diagnosing and treating a diverse range of patients on a virtually never-ending array of individual and medical problems. These underlying facts draw me to seek a medical residency in the U. S., conceivably the only nation on earth where hospitals are highly developed for treatment of a vast array of diseases and conditions. There may be numerous venerable paths in medicine; however, family medicine as a field may be considered to provide a transitional level of specialization which entails a thorough acquaintance of the field unlike the girth in other crucial healthcare areas of expertise. Following several experiences in family medicine, the specialty may be termed as a calling rather than a profession; in view of the fact that, it is the only area of medicine that gives a smooth progression into a broad, yet solid basis in the field of medicine. In brief, family medicine residency offers familiarity and exposure to a diverse range of patients, various conditions, treatments and cures, in ways that could not be matched through classroom lectures. At the outset, I was allured to the field of family medicine for the reason that I wanted to master most medical conditions and have the ability to diagnose and treat them. During the beginning of my clinical career, as a student, I was unnerved into the demanding and multifaceted field of family medicine. I am a migrant from Africa, specifically; Ghana and I entered medical school with the apparition that, people who practice family medicine are individuals with vast acquaintance in treating incalculable ailments. As a student, I had to get acquainted with particular patient situations and participated in numerous activities intended at expanding my familiarity and exposure to a diverse range of patients, various conditions, treatments and cures, in ways that could not be matched through classroom lectures. I was involved in such activities as child healthcare and maternity checkups, various camps on universal polio vaccination and AIDS eradication, and also the design and utilization of public health assessment. All these activities assisted me to develop a deep interest and respect to family medicine and also reinforced my commitment to the medical profession. Through the clinical rotation period, I immersed myself into diagnoses and treatment of different patients assigned to me. I worked in a hospital that attracted a wide range of patients from diverse cultural, economic and social backgrounds. I vividly remember one of my patients called Mr. Smith (not his real name because of patient information confidentiality) who was suffering from diabetic nephropathy complications. Each day at quarter past six in the morning I would wake him up to carry out a physical examination of his condition. Mr. Smith viewed me as an integral part of managing his condition and his stay at the hospital. I learned the disease pathology and also the unique connection between the patient and the doctor. Moreover, I learned how to counsel patients on various medical options available for them in addition to social, financial and ethical issues. I dedicated most periods of my time to patients, and this demanded that I widen interpersonal skills and also effective communication. These skills were helpful in arriving at the possible identification of a condition and its management. Additionally, the clinical rotation experience reinforced my strapping foundation in family medicine through the first-hand practice provided during this period and the experience required to initiate my medical residency. Confronting different challenges of medical theory application, problems diagnosis and keeping current on the ever-changing symptoms and advancements of cures that generate a steady mental confront that is relished by most scientific minds. My close interactions with medical students, other medical residents and practicing doctors, have assisted me in identifying my ultimate individuality for a medical residency program. At present, I am a graduate physician and I am searching for a medical residency program that that serves patients from an all-embracing economic, social and cultural background and that provides a well-built clinical foundation in both specialty and primary aspects. In addition, I value a medical residency program that is eager to train me in a way that is knowledgeable, forthcoming, and readily accessible to residents. Upon successful conclusion of my medical residency, my career and professional goals include volunteering a fraction of my career in assisting patients all over the world and opening a private practice to assist in spreading medical awareness to third world countries. After successfully finishing my family medicine medical residency, I intend to open a private practice that will mostly focus on HIV/AIDS prevention, substance abuse prevention, blood and organ donation and vaccination. These practices, of course, symbolize the core medical difficulties in Ghana, where I was born. In general, I will yearn to dispel myths regarding certain cures, treatments and diseases whilst serving the poor people who cannot meet the expenses of essential medical services.
