Effect of Diabetes on Americans and Productivity al Affiliation Effect of Diabetes on Americans and Productivity Section 1Diabetes is one of the leading causes of deaths in the United States of America especially for African Americans and other people of African descent. The article named Strategies to Prevent and Reduce Diabetes and Obesity in Sacramento, California: The African American Leadership Coalition and University of California, Davis by Ziegahn et.al (2013) specifically studies African Americans in California showing that this disease is serious.

African Americans form a large part of the American population and workforce. Therefore, diabetes being the leading cause of illness and death in this group affects production in the U.S negatively because it renders active workers unproductive because they have to seek medical attention for the disease and in certain cases die leaving their positions unoccupied (Ziegahn, et.al 2013).Section 2 Diabetes has been categorized as a major cause of other illnesses, such as stroke and heart disease among adults in the United States of America.

It is also the leading cause of, blindness, kidney failure and non-traumatic lower-extremity amputations among adults in U.S. Stellefson, Dipnarine & Stopka (2013) in The Chronic Care Model and Diabetes Management in US Primary Care Settings: A Systematic Review characterize the disease as a disabling and life threatening condition. The authors acknowledge that in the year 2010 alone, 11.3 percent of the adult population in U.S. aged 20 and above years had diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Stellefson, Dipnarine & Stopka, 2013).

This evidence shows that diabetes makes healthy and productive U.S. citizens unproductive because it either makes their bodies weak or in other cases makes people to lose parts of their bodies such as limbs that are important in their productivity. This shows that the disease reduces the productivity of Americans as it continues to affect more people in the population. The authors give the original Chronic Care Model (CCM) as the best model to help manage the disease and lead to life changes (Stellefson, Dipnarine & Stopka, 2013).

Section 3 The incidence of type 2 diabetes in the united states of America is increasing each year and affects minority populations in the country especially African Americans. Cherrington et.al (2012) in Intervention Mapping as a Guide for the Development of a Diabetes Peer Support Intervention in Rural Alabama state that the prevalence of diabetes type 2 among African Americans is concentrated especially in the rural south, such as Southern Alabama (Cherrington et.al, 2012). Because this disease mostly affects adults, it makes their productive levels drop because of its disabling capability and the pressures it puts those who have it through in medical care realms.

As such, most African Americans affected by the disease are not as productive as they should be because of the suffering that diabetes puts them through. However, the authors conclude by stating that proper self-management can lead to improved blood pressure control, lipid levels control and glycemic control.
