Health Behavior and Social Media Health Behavior and Social Media The Effects of an Adolescent Asthma Education Intervention on Knowledge,Intention, Behavior, Self-Efficacy and Self-ConsciousnessKara, Zografos, Helen, Hopp, Marshak, David T. Dyjack and Christine, NeishCalifornia State University, FresnoLoma Linda UniversityAbstractIn this study, we evaluated the effects of an asthma education intervention, guided by social cognitive theory, on knowledge, intention, behavior, self-efficacy, and self-consciousness.

The sample consisted of 87 asthmatic adolescents in six middle and/or high schools in California. A non-equivalent comparison group design, with delayed intervention in the comparison group, was utilized. We implemented a modified version of the American Lung Association’s Kickin Asthma curriculum. Self-report questionnaires assessing the key study variables were administered at baseline, at immediate post-intervention, and five weeks after the intervention. There were no statistically significant differences at post-test, controlling for pre-test values, for any of the study variables between the intervention (n = 51) and comparison groups (n = 35).

After collapsing across groups, however, there were statistically significant improvements following the intervention for knowledge, intention, selected behaviorvariables, and self-efficacy. The evaluation of this theory-based asthma education intervention demonstrates the positive impact this curriculum can have on a sample of asthmatic adolescents.© 2010 Californian Journal of Health Promotion. Article Review, Health BehaviorsQuestion IIt is evident that this paper uses social cognitive theory, on knowledge, intention, behavior, self-efficacy, and self-consciousness.

Question II This study applied the social cognitive theory, on knowledge, intention, behavior, self-efficacy, and self-consciousness, for the main purpose of evaluating the effects of an asthma education program on knowledge, self-effectiveness and self-awareness amid youth with asthma. This theory was applied in the following ways. Extra variables were evaluated which includes self-accounted asthma control behaviors (use of peak flow meters, holding chambers, and inhalers, trigger prevention and treatment observance) and objectives linked to the actions when youths are unaccompanied and when in the company of their friends.

Question III The results obtained suggest that the theory chosen was effective in the study. Particularly, progress was established in knowledge and self-effectiveness from baseline to direct post intervention. Progress was established for the objective when unaccompanied from baseline to post program and from baseline to 5 weeks track record. Progress in holding chamber use were established from baseline to post program from baseline to 5 week track record. Progress was also established for the number of days a holding chamber was applied in the past week from baseline to 5 week track record.

In these similar occasions, the holding chamber was used in combination to every day treatment more willingly than on account of enduring more asthma symptoms. Question IVThe authors did not find their health promotion intervention to be effective. This is because the program did not emerge to have an impact on the self-awareness variable. In addition, the asthmatic youths in this research did not account for sentiments of self-awareness on the subject of asthmatic condition. Asthma predominance is extreme amid this population of youth (Zografos, et al., 2010). Consequently, it is likely that the asthmatic youths analysed are not self-aware about their state owing to the fact that a large number of friends also struggle with asthma. Part C. Social Marketing Analysis, Population Health Management The article Recommended Adolescent Health Care Utilization: How Social Marketing Can Help (2009), is an example of a current social marketing campaign targeting a health issue.

In this article campaign, there are various components that are linked to social marketing theory. They include the following:Plan and strategy development by use of behavioral theory.Choosing communication mediums and tools founded on behavioral change goals and knowledge of the targeted audience. (For instance by use of direct information on consumer health status or code of conduct).Advancing and pre-testing resources, characteristically by use of qualitative process (for instance, direct groups testing of possible health mails),Putting into practice the communication project or initiative, for instance, a media campaign or a strategic project of direct communication on the subject of deterrent behaviour by a health care service provider.

Evaluating the efficiency on account of the audience experience, consciousness, feedbacks to mails and behavioral results. (For instance, assessment research on level of advanced diet or ongoing non–smoking habits).Refinement of the materials for prospective communication. It is evident that this campaign will succeed. This is due to the fact that social marketing is a behaviour change strategy, established as efficient above an extensive span of health marketing and disease prevention theme industries (Murphy, & Schoenman, 2009).

Underlying behavioral and communication theory indicates that, social marketing strategies are convenient to other themes and spheres of influence. This is for instance marketing application of recommended health care services. In fact, many of the distinctive social marketing strategies are established efficient in health marketing industries. For instance, tobacco management, nutritional and exercise program marketing and even HIV/AIDs prevention.ReferencesZografos, K., Marshak, H., Dyjack, D.
