Educating expectant mothers: Gynecologists from Oklahoma Community Health Services, Inc. and other Federally Qualified Health Centers that cater to the underserved population in Oklahoma City will conduct dental health education for expectant mothers who come to their clinic for their regular prenatal checkups. These expectant mothers will be educated about the importance of breastfeeding their children, having a balanced diet, and maintaining appropriate oral health in their new-born and infants.

They will also be given the contact information of their gynecologists so that they can contact them any time on the telephone to get advice on products and practices concerning good oral health for their children. Once the babies are born, a pediatrician from the clinic will conduct regular oral health checks as part of the children’s annual health checkup. The services of the gynecologists and pediatricians will be voluntary. Baseline data on the attitude and awareness among expectant mothers on oral health will be compared to data collected every year thereafter to determine if there are any corresponding changes in attitude and behavior. 2. School-based dental health screenings: The Organization of Rural Oklahoma Schools (OROS), which is an organized group of over 400 rural schools, will help in implementing the ‘Dental Health Promotion Program for Rural School Children’ at three randomly selected rural schools in Oklahoma City during the first year (Organization of Rural Oklahoma Schools, 2007)..
