The gynecologists will educate all expectant mothers who visit the health center for their regular prenatal checkups about the importance of breastfeeding their children, having a balanced diet, and maintaining appropriate oral health in their newborns and infants. Once the babies are born, the pediatrician will conduct oral health checks as part of the children’s annual health checkup. The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry has given a written commitment regarding the participation of two students, one resident, and one faculty for each of the three rural schools enrolled in this program.

This team will conduct dental health screenings every year for all children between the ages of 6 and 10 years within the school campus (approximately 2000 children in all). Twice a year this team will provide a one-hour presentation on oral health and hygiene to children between the ages of 6 and 10 years. The participation of the students and residents is voluntary. They will assist the program manager in conducting research and evaluation, and their work will be used toward their practical experience and earn them credits.

A program manager will be hired to oversee the overall functioning of the program and report the findings to the funding agencies and partnering organizations. 2. Material Resources: The material resources will include dental exam packs that will be used by the dental professionals from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry to screen children for decayed, missing, and filled teeth. The program manager will work from a rented office space on the University of Oklahoma campus. The Organization of Rural Oklahoma Schools has given a written commitment to provide one room in each of the school campuses to store program-related materials and conduct dental health screenings. 3. Supplies: The supplies will include paper, stationery, pens, clipboards, and flip charts, which will be used during discussions, presentations, and other administrative activities.

The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry has verbally agreed to provide relevant posters, overhead projectors, and videos and CDs for the purpose of educating rural school children about maintaining proper dental health. 4. Equipment: Necessary equipment includes one laptop for each of the three schools and a printer. Each student will be identified by a code to maintain privacy and confidentiality, and his or her dental health data will be recorded in the laptop. The printer will be used to prepare reports. 5. Transportation: The program manager and the dental health team from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry will be reimbursed for their travel to each of the participating schools to implement and evaluate the program.

Providing dental screening and preventive services on the school campus will greatly improve the accessibility of such health services among the underserved population. 6. Informational Resources: The professional knowledge and expertise of providers - gynecologists, pediatricians, and dental health professionals - is valuable in creating awareness and generating oral health behavior change among expectant mothers, their children, and rural school students.
