? Scientific Methods and Why I Cannot Live With/Without Science No: Scientific Methodsand Why I Cannot Live With/Without Science Scientific Methods Scenario 1: You arrive home late at night. You walk up to the front door, unlock it, and reach it to turn on the light switch located just inside the front door. The light does not come on. Apply the Scientific method to find out why the does not come on? As the scenario describes, I am observing the light does not coming on. Then the question was that why the light is not coming on. I observed that the light of a refrigerator is on. I made hypothesis that some short circuit in the room might have blown the fuse of the room. I experimented on the hypothesis by checking the lights of other rooms and I had the previous experience of the blown fuse in the same room and if the fuse is blown the circuit becomes incomplete and nothing will work. All lights in other rooms came on and not a single appliance in the same room is working. In this way, I analyzed and concluded that the hypothesis is correct. In addition, a short circuit blew the fuse that is in between the supplied power and the light and that was the reason that the light did not come on. Scenario 2: In my home garden, my father placed a big plastic container to water the plants. The container always gave warm water in the evening and the tank faced the sun all day. The tank had a black color. Therefore, I questioned why the container gives warm water. I observed that as the daytime passes, the temperature of the water drops and during the daytime, the temperature of the water rises. I thought that the solar energy is making the water so much hotter but then I realized that our home also faces sun but it does not get warm. Then, I made a hypothesis that the black color of the container makes the temperature of the water in the container to rise. I had read somewhere that the black color absorbs light and white color reflects light (Wilcox, 2001). To experiment on the hypothesis I made, I bought another container of the similar size and colored it in white by using white paint. I left both the containers to face the all day solar energy and measured the temperature of both the containers as the sun lowered with a thermometer. I analyzed that the temperature of the water in the black container has temperature more than water in the white container. In this way, the hypothesis is proved that it is the black color of the container that is making the temperature of the water to exceed. I painter the black container in the white color and now it gives water with temperature of the surroundings. Why I Cannot Live With/Without Science A normal day for most of the people including me stars from the utilization of science. I wake up with an alarm on the clock that is a scientific instrument and most common in today’s world. Then I switch lights on, that are too blessed by the science. In an artificial light, we are able to see the thing better and clearly. Next, I go to the toilet, brush my teeth with a toothbrush, and toothpaste, both evolved as the result of scientific research. I see my face in mirror and have some breakfast with toasted bread slices toasted by a toaster manufactured in an industry that utilizes science to manufacture hundreds of toasters every day and take some milk from the refrigerator that is too a scientific invention. The bread comes from a factory that utilizes science to produce thousands of bags of bread every day. Next, I dress up in my clothes manufactured in a garment factory that utilizes science to sew the clothes and transport them to the garment store. After dressing up, I watch the clock once again and try to reach to the school as soon as possible by taking any vehicle. Cars, busses, etc are the mean of transport and all are given to us by science. I reach school in time because of the transportation that helped me reach school in no time. Next, I go to class, and see science all around me. Lights, fans, air conditioning system, all are scientific inventions and above the force that is making that appliances works, electricity comes from a grid, which is linked with a power generation station. The power generation station generates power in a purely scientific manner. The electricity from the power station is essential as it provides us with a power to do several tasks easily like pumping water from the earth, etc. we utilize ball pen, pointer, ink pen, etc all are the inventions due to the scientific research. The projectors, computers, scanners, printers, etc are the scientific inventions or modified versions of the scientific inventions, which I utilize at the school. The books I have studied in the school, comes from a publisher that prints a larger number of books to provide the books to the students. The publisher utilizes science to make copies of the book. Then I come back from the school having seen so much involvement of science in our lives. Science has totally changed our lives and influenced every aspect of our lives. I have utilized some kind of transport to come back home and after reaching home, I switch television on to watch my favorites television programs. Television is a scientific invention and the idea behind the television is the utilization of radio waves to transmit the video or picture and sound at the same time. I utilize mobile phone every day and mobile phone is a scientific invention too. Mobile phone is a modified version of the phone invented by Alexander Graham Bell but no one can say that modern mobile phones are just a modified version, as they are much different from the early editions of the phone. Digital switching revolutionized the industry of telephony. Now everyone has a personal mobile phone and communication is increased at a massive level. Then, I go to the washroom to take shower. In winters the water in the shower is heated by a water electric heating system that is blessed by the science. After shower, I utilize computer and internet again a scientific tool after using computer I go to bed. I this way, science have a high impact on my life. People may have different ideas about the utilization of science. Science has improved the quality of life by transforming our thinking of a transport, food, telecommunication, etc. In the modern world, everyone has a mobile phone, now a person can have a detailed map of his path on his phone through GPS (Global positioning system) (Ahmed, 2002). Someone can make and receive calls in and from any portion of the world. The dedicated satellites for the television transmission make it possible for the people to watch the happenings at the other side of the world. The medicines we use help us heal quickly, the food we eat come from the farms that utilize science to produce that food. Higher productions are achieved by the utilization of modern fertilizers, pesticides and different types of medicines for different plants. Plastic has an application in almost all the electronic appliances and nearly in everything, we utilize today. Plastic is made around 1900s and since then the industry has grown widely make the human life easier. Plastic has the capability to replace wood for many applications. The transportation we utilize today is able to shorten the time of the journey up to few hours from one end of the world to the other like jet aero planes, etc. Similarly, the vehicles we utilize can help to complete the journey taking much lesser time. There are some negative impacts of the science, which science have the potential to resolve. Like the environmental aspects. Modern science has given us many relieves but considering the negative aspects, the means of transportation today produce green house gases at much a massive level that cannot be controlled. Similarly, the modern electric power generation plants are producing the air pollution at a massive level by producing green house gases. The main component of green house gases is carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide that are produces when coal is burnt. The green house gases are making the temperature of the earth to rise. During the past few decades, the temperature of the earth has risen by one degree on the Celsius scale (Patro, 2007). One degree may be not considerable for us but for it highly influences the Atlantic glaciers and other glaciers in the world to melt every day. The melting of the glaciers raises the sea level every year. However, science has the potential to solve the problems as the utilization of the solar panels for generating power may reduce the carbon footprints. If the chemical factories utilize cleaner methods in the manufacturing of the chemicals, water pollution can be stopped. I am unable to visualize a day of my life without the utilization of science. Science has such a heavy impact on my life that is unable for me to survive without science. We use computer, internet, television, mobile phone, telephone, etc every day and it will be impossible for me to realize that all the communication in the world will stop working (Williams & Borman, 1994) and no light can be switched on. The world will be in dark and our farms will produce less food, most of the businesses in the world will have no value. In this way, it is impossible for me to live without science. This course has a high impact on my thoughts about science. Now I, vision everything as scientific or non-scientific. I apply scientific methods to every question and observations. I apply the five steps of scientific method even though the matter involves science or not. The course changed the way I thought about the science. Now, I respect the inventors a lot and rank their scientific research as the finest work that can be done to serve the human race. References Ahmed, El-Rubbany. (2002).
