Running Head: Women Identities Abortion and Women Identities Number] Women Identities A woman is considered as a sensitive individual who is frequently influenced by all the incidents that take place around her and causes some psychological impacts on her identity. In this paper we shall discuss the effects of abortion on women identities, to understand the impacts of this controversial topic we have selected two movies “Lake of Fire” and “Vera Drake” in which practice of abortion has been shown.

Abortion is a deliberate murder of growing baby in women`s womb. In America, it is considered as legal act since 1973 because optimistic believes that every woman has right to do any thing she wants to do to protect her body from any harm. But before that it was considered as illegal for which Bell Hooks said in his book “Feminism in America has never emerged from women who are victimized by sexist oppression” (Hooks, 2000). The movie “Vera Drake” depicted a noble woman who helped others pregnant women in their abortion secretly because she considered it good to help those women who are in pain and wants to get rid from the pain.

One character of the movie named as Stan said “Whatever she done, she done it out of the goodness of her heart” (Leigh, 2004). On the other hand, the movie “Lake of fire” supported both the ideas of abortion by depicting abortion legal because it is a woman’s right to take any step for her health. The movie showed abortion as an illegal act because men and women both take criminal advantage of it by having unprotected sex (Kaye, 2006). From the theme of both the movies, it has been noticed that women identities are greatly influenced from the controversial topic of abortion, they have come out from the pressure of unwanted conception as well as they have gained confidence as they are now legally allowed to take decisions for themselves.

Therefore, it could be concluded abortion is now a legal right of women which has positively influenced their identities but still it is illegal in many developing countries. Reference List Hooks, B.
