Sexism language is the use of verbal communication, which undervalues members of one sex, usually women, and therefore promotes gender inequality. It victimizes women by depicting them imperceptible or trivializing them, simultaneously spreading concepts of male supremacy. The general masculine mirrors gender inequity because women never perceive general or symbolic humanity. Men symbolize the universal or the whole humanism in general. My motivation for doing this paper is that many feminists are no longer involved in sexist language. It is assume that pointing out instances of sexism is, in logic, too easy. Observe that it is now no longer adequate to accuse contents of being bigot and unfolding ways in which they influence the reader; it is essential to take account of a clear sense of how a precise, domination extracting, controlling text might have been built. This is done to achieve the position of being a non-controlling and non-bigot text (Eschholz, Rosa & Clark, 1986).
I argue that we need to shift to examine the slight and for this reason more menacing bias and exclusionary dialogue that thrive. This is one of the key points of this paper, i.e. stirring from a simple study of clear and plain sexism, which I think we have to do, given that examples of overt sexism still flourish, to an analysis of tortuous sexism, that further restrained form of contextualized sexism. Standard linguistics unaided will not provide us with the gear to evaluate discrimination, because if sexism is further socially unwavering and simply locally made significant, we will require a replica of analysis, which is capable of doing more than analyze expressions in isolation.
Thesis questions
a) Researching in the internet because, it is full of many articles under the same topic. People should utilize it to expand their knowledge on the topic and expand their encounter with the different forms of sexism. It also enables them to use the correct and acceptable language and avoid being sexual bias.(Provides the sites to search for similar articles and controversial arguments)
b) Because the topic has been neglected these days by most sexist claiming it has become so cliché so by the end of this paper I should be able to convince people to take action and revive the spirit.(It is no more specific, can be argued with evidence showing that it has not been neglected as such)
c) Teaching people who are not familiar with the topic at all will be a hard task, or those others that are bits familiar with it but neglect it because it is of no importance to them. (Can still be argued with evidence showing that people have not neglected it and no person is unfamiliar with the topic in question)
Data collection method and process
This is how I went collecting data regarding the topic in question:
Primary methods
Administering questionnaires: I went around administering questionnaires to everyone I could find whether he/she was familiar with sexism language or not. I asked them what they understood by sexism language, if they had come across such instances and how they dealt with them or how they should have acted.
Conducting structured, semi-structured or unstructured interviews with individuals and/or groups: Those I could not get to question in my first method because they were not around for various reasons, I organized this section for them. I either conducted interviews with them, single handedly or in a group, or asked them those same questions as mentioned above there (Nilsen, 1977).
Observation: I observed every single situation that involved a male and a female conversing or males conversing about females. I also observed how in different situations the female gender consulting or how their decision was considered or viewed.
Audiotaping: I listened to songs, tapings, radio stations conversations and programs and just anything audio and listened for sexism language use.
Videotaping: I watched movies, songs videos, television programs and anything visual that involved sexism language. I kept note of references of female gender.
Keeping a research diary or log, for example when conducting action research: I kept recording and noting down all the findings I could, including certain actions towards the female gender, which I consider sexism (Thorne & Henley, 1975)
Secondary methods
I went to libraries and read on sexism language. This I did from magazines, old newspapers and books covering the topic widely.
I compared what I read with what I had gathered from my research and noted down the similarities between the two.
Analysis
According to my research, I was able to conclude that most people do not even use the internet efficiently, especially when it comes to sexism language and related issues. Therefore, I argue in favor of my thesis that very few researches and read about sexism in the internet. Theoretically, it is believed that only those concerned with the topic or line of work research about it and so to say I concur with the theory (Penfield, 1987)
Sexist these days think the topic is a cliché, it has be used to cover up many other un-social issues, and according to my research, it proves that they are right, or at least I agree with them. As part of agreeing with my thesis, I think that the topic is in use to cover up other issues until it has lost its true meaning. In addition, to argue against my thesis and sexists that the topic is not a ‘cliché’ as they put it. The topic might have be overused but still not everyone has read/come across/heard it.
I argue in favor of my thesis that it will be a hard task-teaching people on sexism language because according to my research I noticed how few people knew about sexism language and those few that were familiar with it neglected. It was no big deal to them plus society had, in its own way, taught them that the female gender was inferior since they were small (Lakoff, 1975).
Conclusion
Findings:
The female gender is generally inferior to the male gender as according to most people. This is from my research questionnaire that I conducted. Even the females themselves consider their selves inferior to the male gender.
The media fraternity contributes highly in sexism language. The kind of language used in Medias is sexually unfair, downgrading the female gender at the same time placing the male gender up.
Biased language use. Mostly the English language is sexually unfair. So it promotes sexism language in a way and since it is the most widely used language in the world it has the majority influence on sexism.
People do not take the topic seriously. Even sexists whose job is solemnly ensuring that such things do not happen are the ones saying that topic has become so cliché. Therefore, this has been another contribution to it.
Most societies do not value the female gender. Almost in all traditions and customs, the woman is viewed as an item of man’s pleasure and he has the power to do as he wills without her consent. Therefore, it is common that man is superior to woman, and that is a hard ideology to change.
People are aware of the issue of inequality but they ignore it as if they enjoy it especially men (Mills, 2008).
Ways of combating sexism language:
The female gender should be in the front line in campaigning for their place in the society including in language use. It is time they stop being inferior and this will only happen when they will stop downgrading themselves and get a voice of themselves..
The English language made gender sensitive global. Although it has already started being done it should be harried and made aware to everyone of every age, race and gender. Ensuring minimal sexism language.
The media fraternity should be enlightened on the topic and made aware of common mistakes made within its range that contribute to sexism language and how to avoid such circumstances. This will be a major step in eradicating gender unfairness.
Some cultural and traditional beliefs abolished or dropped. Those customs that undermine the female gender should either abolish or change to upgrade sexual equality.
The topic made globally serious. This will ensure everybody to be aware of it and take it seriously.
By observing the above mentioned then we assure sexism language free world.
