Book Report Human Sexuality Book Report Human Sexuality Lauren Streicher, MD is a doctor certified by American College ofObstetricians and Gynecologists. Currently, she is the Associate Professor of Obstetrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School (Streicher, 2014). The author asserts that most American women have bedroom problems that inhibit them from having a vibrant sex life. According to the author, bedroom problems do not occur due to work stresses or relationship issues. The problems are real and physical, and most women remain mum and compromise their sex expectations. The doctor in this book talks with women to enable them regain their libido and fix their intercourse issues. The author offers practical advices to enable women have a joyful sex life. (1) “Twenty five percent of women have orgasmic dysfunction where they encounter difficulty to reach orgasm.” (p. 23). Recently, new developments in sexual medicine make headlines with a promise to increase orgasmic potential. Two procedures that include O-Shot and the new patent implant promise pleasurable results. Hopefully, this will enable a woman enjoy sex and reach orgasm more naturally. (2) “The inability to orgasm stem from weakened pelvic floor muscles that occur with childbirth or after menopause.” (p. 31). Fixing the root cause will naturally solve orgasmic dysfunction without using needles or medication. Exercises and tones of the pelvic muscles can improve a woman’s sexual experience while providing targeted stimulation that will increase orgasm. (3) “The O-Shot makes many claims concerning orgasm and sensation since it is an expensive procedure, invasive to run the risk of scar tissue or uncomfortable sensation.”(p. 43). The doctor proposes natural solutions such as Intensity and Replens to ensure comfort before sex. (4) “There is a misconception that there is no alternative to loss of libido or sexual dysfunction since many doctors are not professionals in sexual health to offer latest solutions.”(p. 73) Assisted reproductive techniques can help people with fertility issues. Medical doctors can provide guidelines to improving libido since it is a psychological process. (5) “Sixty-one percent of American adults turn to the internet for most of their intimate health information.” (p.97). A higher percentage of people resort to the internet for probable solutions as posted by others with similar problems. It is advisable to such people, especially Women with that problem, to consult their medical profession to provide them with the best solution. (6) “Misinformation circulating the internet is that yoghurt will promote growth of healthy strains of bacteria in the stomach and the intestines.” (p. 113). In reality, flavored yogurts promote vaginal health. (7) “The misconception in the internet is that vaginal odor occurs for failure to clean the region properly.”(p.131). In reality, vaginal pH is easily disrupted by daily occurrences such as intercourse, hormonal fluctuations, and menstruation. (8) “Another misconception is that external cleansing will solve the problem.” (p.133). The best way to eliminate and prevent odor is in the use of RepHresh gel used after period or sexual intercourse. (9) “Kegel exercises will strengthen the pelvic floor muscles” (p.139).Some women experience frustration due to lack of effective kegel exercises. One should rely on a trusted health site or a medical profession to provide the best advice. (11)”The author came to the knowledge that 40 percent of the populations have sexual issues.”(p.146). Due to that, the doctor decided to write Love Sex Again this year. The book captures conversations of Streitcher with women concerning sexuality and some of the solutions to benefit them. The author leaves no detail to the imagination. The book is complete with descriptions, as the doctor has encountered many sexual issues in the course of her work. The book is an essential resource for men and women to guide them in their sexual relations. The cover states" A gynecologist finally fixes the issues that are sabotaging your sex life" (Streitcher, 2014). (12) “The author mentions everything that one might ask a gynecologist ranging from lubricants, drugs, the cardiac effects of sexual activity, and sex toys.” According to the author, there is a lot of information concerning sexuality such that she can add another 200 pages to make the book longer than its current form. (13) “Streitcher (2014) defines the new word sex ability as a physical ability to have sex.” (p.156)The difference between sexuality and sex ability is that the sexuality refers to different things such as physical attraction and relationships while sex ability entails a proper functioning body an ability to have sex. (14) “The author points out that the term does not necessarily mean intercourse.” (p. 187). One must distinguish same-sex relationship, heterosexuality, and self-sexuality. (15) “There is an assumption if a person does not have a partner they are not sexual “(p.58). People in sexual relationships that fail to have an orgasm in five years should seek medical help. (16) “In summary, sex ability is the ability to have sex rather than how you have sex or whom you have sex within its definition.” (16) “The author motivates women that have issues in their sex life since each woman perceives other as having incredible sex life while they do not.” Love Sex Again will give hope to the women as they go through a normal phase in life. Sexual issues have remedy to enable women live happier lives as they seek sexual relief. Streicher (2014) (17) “says that female sexual dysfunction affects 40 percent of women and 60 percent of postmenopausal women.” (18) “It is a common assumption that women sexual dysfunction as being normal.” (19) “Some of the causes of sexual dysfunction include low libido, depression, medication, and having painful intercourse. Endometriosis or genital dryness can cause pain leading to decreased libido. Someone fails to lubricate due to hormonal issues such as menopause and birth control pills. (20) “One needs adequate blood supply to the vagina to have normal lubrication. “Women with cardiac issues and diabetes have decline of blood supply at the vagina. Such women can benefit by using the right lubrication. (21) “ Women have anxiety in the consumption of hormones. Vaginal estrogen is applicable for all women especially women with breast cancer since they have a low systemic absorption that it does not increase the blood levels beyond postmenopausal range. (22)The author says, "Women may lose sex as they age." Women lose their libido due to lack of estrogen as women reach menopause. A common misconception is that the estrogen is parallel to poison. Those women that approach menopause and lack libido can benefit from estrogen pill ring or cream to have sex again. (23) “Those with a negative view on estrogen pill can take non-hormonal Replens that supplement the natural lubrication to moisturize the cells.” Additionally one should attempt silicone lubricant that makes sex pleasurable. (24) "The worldview underrates the female condom." Not only does the female condom prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancy but also it makes one to have quality sex. The ring on the outside provides clitoral stimulation and lubricates the vagina walls. (25)"A strong pelvic floor will bring back orgasm." The author informs that an orgasm fails due to weak pelvic muscles a condition in childbirth or menopause. Such women can benefit from an intone device from a local physical therapists to improve the pelvic floor. (26) "A headache after orgasm is an indication of a serious problem." Women that encounter sub-arachnoids hemorrhage during climax are an indication of a problem." (27) "The use of Vaseline as a lubricant can cause recurrent infections." "Infertility treatments should not ruin sex life." Women should apply lubricants to continue enjoying sex. (28) Women that go through chemotherapy radiation do not have sex ability." Cancer-related cure leads to a reduction of the estrogen levels that can lead to a low quality of life. A woman with that situation can purchase a non-hormonal prescription from the pharmacist to repair the damaged tissue. (29) Vagina smell can reduce intercourse." Some of the causes of vagina smell include menstruation, medications, or pregnancy. Any of those conditions causes a change in pH will cause odor, bacterial infection, and discharge. Such women use rephresh gel to eliminate the vagina odor and decrease bacterial vaginosis. (30) Women should talk with doctors concerning their personal concerns related to sexual health." Streicher (2014) believes that women can obtain real solutions to dryness, low libido, and pain they experience during intercourse. Love Sex Again is a book that offers solutions to women that face physical and hormonal issues that relate to sexual function such as cardiac conditions, lack of sleep, and menopause. According to the author all woman deserve sex ability to enjoy the satisfaction in sex and all excitement. The author states that fallopian tubes can be the road for uncharacteristic cells leading to ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer has limitation in the early screening; only noticed after spreading. Ten percent of the cases of ovarian cancer is genetic while majority of cases do not have risk factors and family history. Gynecologists cite that hormonal contraception lower the risk of ovarian cancer. A pill taken for five years can reduce the risk of the ailment. The birth control pill can also avoid ovarian cancer. Streicher (2014) argue that tubal litigation can reduce the rates of ovarian cancer. Tubal sterilization performed on different women reduces the risk of ovarian cancer by 34 percent. The Journal of Gynecological Cancer suggests that the majority of the disorder originate from the tube and that the tube affects the frequency of cancer. Currently, the Canadian government proposes the removal of the tube other than tubal litigation. Women that do not plan future pregnancies can request the doctor to remove tubes together with uterus, remove an entire tube during tube litigation, remove ovaries and the tubes in case of BRCA mutation. The author states women with fibroids end up with a hysterectomy as they go through menopause. The endometrial procedure destroys the lining of uterus to reduce bleeding. Alternatively, women with troublesome fibroids can use hysteroscopy myomectomy procedure. Seventy per cent of fibroids occurs at the uterine wall leading to gynecological tumor. Some of the fibroids lead to heavy periods that can lead to anemia. Myomectomy is a surgical method that removes the fibroids that require an abdominal incision leaving behind the uterus. The author informs of the dilation and curettage procedure that involves cervical opening to place the instrument at the uterine cavity to remove the lining of the uterus. Streitcher (2014) asserts that some women assume there is no remedy to the issue of reduced libido and sexual dysfunction. Many clinicians do not have the expertise in sexual health to offer the latest solutions. The book is an inspiration too many silent suffers since it indicates an easy fix does exist to make a lasting life change phase. The author believes that infertility treatments should not ruin sex life. Infertility remedies that include assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF causes problems with interest and sexual desire. Fertility treatments depict sadness, stress, and anxiety as well as physical issues such as dryness and vaginal pain. The solution to the problem includes pre-seed lubricant that helps one to optimize natural fertility to restore sexual pleasure. Streicher (2014) observes that for many years birth control pills give women the power to determine when they become pregnant. Women do not have the information that the pill that has this freedom can affect libido and vaginal lubrication where women will lose the desire for sex. The author states that, "A woman that takes birth control pills cannot comprehend why vagina is dry as Sahara Desert other than being 25 years of age and still lusting after the partner. The birth control pill may be a likely problem. Most women find the birth control pill as a good thing since their hormonal contraception will enhance sexual health. The lucky pill users depict more fantasies that are sexual, better orgasms, and interest in having sex. They do this to remove the fear of pregnancy, heavy bleeding, cramps, and go a long way to having better sex. For the unlucky women, the usage of the bill becomes a problem once hormonal contraction leads to reduced libido and experience painful sex. The author observes that youngest women take low dose birth control pills. The women will experience low levels of estrogen as they approach menopause. Estrogen is a hormone that increases sex drive and contributes to vaginal lubrication. The birth control pill contains estrogen, and one would imagine as a sexual booster while it is not. Streicher(2014) cites that birth control pill will lower the amount of testosterone produced by ovaries secreted by SHBG. SHBG connects to testosterone to make the molecule inactive. A high SHBG level lowers the function of testosterone. Similarly, the birth control pill will poison the testosterone receptor if a person consumes in high doses. The estrogen and testosterone receptors in the vagina contribute to lubrication. A low testosterone level makes intercourse drier and more painful; also called vestibulodynia. A low testosterone translate to moodiness, lethargy, and fatigue. A recent study to measure the thickness of labia minora, size of entrance of vagina and clitoris on the women that consume the pill has the following findings: A thin labia, small clitorises and reduced entrance of the vagina that correlate with increased pain during sex. The same researchers show decreased orgasm on the women that consume the pill. Other women that consume the pill could have a genetic variant that can lead to deficient testosterone receptor Women with that condition need plenty of testosterone to lubricate the organs and maintain a healthy life. Women with testosterone trifecta encounter the following problems less production of testosterone to perform its purpose, synthetic progesterone poison the testosterone receptor when consumed in high quantity, and the testosterone receptor fails to function properly. To solve the problem, women should use an alternative contraception like IUD. Conversely, one can apply a vaginal cream upon prescription of a doctor that will facilitate healing. Women need to understand the contents of the birth control pills since some of the pills contain Drospirenone that contribute to dryness and low libido. To counter this problem, it is essential to use a silicon lubricant or any other hormonal pills. The pill first use was in 1960 prescribed to include the hormone period to ensure normalcy on the menstrual period. Researchers that prescribe the pill thought that it could make women comfortable as a form of contraception. The benefit of the pill includes on menstrual problems, no cramps, and no chance of unintentional pregnancy. For many years, gynecologists recommend the continuous use of the pill instead of cyclic use to eliminate pain for women with endometriosis. Currently, menstrual suppression is a convenient option other than medical indication. Most women use hormonal contraception to avoid bleeding every month. Most women intend to have pregnancy occasioned by few periods of bleeding. The prehistoric women experienced 50 menstrual cycles in a lifetime due to short lifetime and increased rate of pregnancy. The modern woman experiences 450 menstrual periods in their lifetime. The average woman has many days of bleeding and majority of women can eliminate the menstrual cycles once there is a safe way to do so. Currently, many new forms of hormonal contraception have the same package that will reduce bleeding in a safe way. Birth control pills and the use of a Nuva Ring will enable one to skip the hormone-free days. According to Streicher (2014), 25 percent of the women have orgasmic dysfunction depicted by persistent delay of orgasm that precedes a normal sexual excitement period. Some of the causes of orgasmic dysfunction include medical problems and hormonal issues. The doctors prescribe the O-Shot procedure that injects blood platelets to the vaginal tissues. Different doctors agree to the method that can generate a healthier and functional tissue. Other than improving ones sex life, the O-Shot can cure urinary incontinence. Most of the women that encounter difficulty in orgasm also have involuntary loss of urine due to weak pelvic floor muscles. The issue with the O-Shot is that it lacks enough research to assert its safety and efficiency in curing the ailment. Another procedure that the women can benefit from in response to orgasmic dysfunction is surgery implant inserted in the spinal cord. An interesting alternative entails Intensity device to exercise the tone pelvic muscles together with clitoral stimulation. The O-shot method can work well with other methods such as Intensity. In conclusion, the audience of the author is millions of women that have the effect by sexual dysfunction where the author sheds light on the medical causes and offers real solutions. The media statistics show that most women do not have great sex due to sexual difficulties, painful experience, or even low libido. The author would like all the women suffering different sexual problems to discuss them with their doctors and most importantly follow her advice in the book. The author intends to fix the problem for one to enjoy sex truly to have a healthy life. The book presents information in a friendly tone using hilarious anecdotes to depict the immense experience of the writer. I recommend the book to all women whether or not they have a sexual problem. Doctor Streicher uses a well-written nonprofessional approach to document a sensitive topic. The book is a great resource to people with sexual problems since it will rejuvenate their missed feelings. The author is a champion on women sexual problems since it has answers to the common sexual problems they have. References Streicher, L. (2014).
