Art: Points of Interest The interesting part in this writings is that art is explained in ways previously not thought of. The authors refer to art as “an agent of magic’ and “an aid of meditation.” These are views of art not easily thought of. Besides being a mere form of communication, the authors reveal that art has a deeper meaning to society.Points of Confusion As much as the information presented reveals much about art, very little effort is made to teach the reader as to how to differentiate between a woman painter from a man.
While this question is raised, no definitive effort is made to this extent.Points of Disagreement I do not agree with the authors as far as the notion that the use of female characters as less authoritative in pictures depicts male chauvinism. That, in my opinion, is just what society is. Even in the real world when photographs are taken, women are usually in the pictures’ foreground and the males in the background. Feminists are wrong on this subject given that women enjoy their position as the ‘gentle’ part of the picture.
Questions from the Information The authors have done a lot in presenting art especially with consideration of gender as portrayed by artists. Even with this, some information presented begs to be wholly explained anew. For example, why would a majority of artists continue painting female characters without consideration for gender? Is it an issue society will never get away from and simply has to accept?ReferencesGill P. (1999). Gender and Art (Art and Its Histories Series). Yale University Press.
