REPORT PROPOSAL Introduction This report proposal proposes submitting a written report on the d Thermodynamics II (ME 3040). This is done as part of the requirements for the course ENGL 2005, hence its submission therein. This report will mainly be a literature review on important aspects of the course ME3040, including the basics of the course, its application, and importance. The reason for undertaking the report is mainly to review my understanding of this course and how well I am conversant with important concepts in the course.
Background
Thermodynamics II (ME 3040) is one of the courses that the University of Wyoming offers to its students that pursue Mechanical Engineering at the undergraduate level. This course comprises different topics including advanced thermodynamics topics such as Maxwell’s relations, compressible flow and combustion. The knowledge acquired in this course is directly applicable to design of refrigeration cycles, humidification systems, and Rankine cycles. A prerequisite to this course is CHEM 1020 and ES 2310. This course is offered at UW in the fall semester and is cross listed with ESE 3040.1
Proposed Report
The proposed report is about Thermodynamics II (ME 3040), one of the courses offered to all students of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. The purpose of the report is mainly to review my understanding of the course. This will also serve to familiarise me more with the course, including adding new knowledge about the course. This report is intended for a specific audience that will hear it during its presentation and some that will read it. My English teacher, as well as other English teachers is part of this audience. In addition, the instructor for this course (Thermodynamics II) is Dr. Zheng Yuan will be part of the audience. Likewise, my colleagues will make a larger part of the audience for this report.
In coming up with this report proposal, I worked as an independent individual. However, I consulted various articles about thermodynamics in order to increase the validity and reliability of the report proposal. The concept of thermodynamics has a long history starting from the primitive days, where its understanding centred around getting power from hot bodies or heat and ability of hot body to produce heat. Although this is in part the scope for mechanical engineering thermodynamics, the scope of thermodynamics is broader than this.2 Thermodynamics is an important subject to all engineering students. Apart from theoretical analysis, demonstration of the laws of thermodynamics is essential for students’ greater understanding.3 Thermodynamics helps to explain more things about the world around us than most of the other physical theories.4 There is wide applicability of thermodynamics. This includes all types of vehicles, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, air and gas compressors, power plants, heat transfer, and renewable energy.5
Research
In developing this report proposal, I conducted research on the report topic in the university library and valid internet sources. In the university library, I read different articles and books on thermodynamics, just to widen my knowledge on the topic. I mostly visited the library in the afternoons on weekdays for about three days in the past week. I also searched different articles on the internet on this topic. In total, I chose four sources to include in my report. These were mainly drawn from the internet.
Personnel
There are three major individuals that were involved in the development of this report proposal. I am the first person, since I have been primarily responsible for this report proposal and the final report. My name is Abdulhadi Al Musalami, a student at the UW. My major is Mechanical Engineering, having done a 57 credit. Being a sophomore student, my graduation year is 2017 in fall. Currently, I am enrolled to ENG 2005, one of the courses offered to Mechanical Engineering students at UW, for which I am submitting this report proposal.
The second person to be involved in this report proposal is Dr. Yuan Zheng. He is an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at the UW. He is specialized in Thermodynamics, Heat and mass Transfer and combustion. Currently, Dr. Yuan is my instructor of the course Thermodynamics II (ME 3040). He facilitated wide knowledge on thermodynamics, which has been incorporated in this report. Previous consultations with Dr. Yuan have also been of great significance in this report proposal.
Lastly, Mr. Keeney Colin has equally played a role in this report. He is a senior lecturer at the UW Department of English. Currently, Mr. Keeney is my instructor of the course ENG 2005. In his lecturers, he has shared great knowledge on writing styles and techniques among other important language and presentation aspects suited to the mechanical engineering profession. This knowledge has guided the writing of this report. In addition, consultations with Mr. Keeney have proved to be of great use in this report proposal mainly because of the guidance he offered to facilitate the completion of this report proposal.
Writing
Mr. Colin K. Keeney, the ENG 2005 instructor, will be my consultant during the writing stage of the report. The primary location for writing this report will be within the UW premises.
Schedule
The final report is intended to be completed by 30th November, 2014. I will read the selected articles and summarize them by 20th November, 2014. The remaining days will be spent on finalizing the report and polishing it where necessary. At each stage of writing the report, there will be consultations with Mr. Keeney for guidance.
Conclusion
This report proposal proposes for submitting a written report on Thermodynamics II (ME 3040), one of the courses studied by Mechanical Engineering students at the University of Wyoming. Approving this report proposal will be highly significant to me for various reasons. First, it will give me an opportunity to write the final report on the topic. This will enable me to put to use my knowledge on writing styles and techniques, document formats and presentation during the both the writing and presentation stages of the final report. This will also expose me to report writing, which is one of the important practices in the engineering profession, hence preparing me for my future career. In addition, this will be important to me, as far as the course Thermodynamics II is concerned. Researching on this course will widen my knowledge on the course, as I will have the opportunity to consult widely different articles on the course.
