ABSTRACT

Management practices play an important role in determining the effectiveness and overall success of an organisation. Although management practices mainly revolve around planning, organising, controlling and leading, every organisation has its distinctive management practices. In most cases, the management practices used in an organisation are determined by the organisation’s vision and goals, the structure and size of an organisation, available resources and the type of market that an organisation operates in among many other factors. Nonetheless, a considerable number of studies conducted previously postulate that culture is one of the overriding factors that determine the management practices employed in organisations. It is on this premise, that this study was conducted so as to investigate the influence of the Nigerian national culture on management practices used in small and medium scale enterprises in Lagos.

The main purpose of this study was to establish how different aspects or dimensions of the Nigerian culture affect the way that managers of SMEs in Lagos operate. This study also sought to examine the impact that particularistic or universalistic management practices have on these SMEs.
