Housing policies in Britain have local planning authorities mandate developers of housing projects to provide a certain percentage of affordable housing for low-income groups (Tiesdell, 2004). The two aims are as follows. UK housing, however, did not meet stated objectives, such as acceptance from high-income and middle classes due to preference for communities that are of their equal socio-economic level. Canadian Governments began supporting social housing projects by channeling funds through non-governmental organizations like the Canadian housing cooperatives (Tiesdell, 2004, 195-212).
Cooperatives have undergone remarkable developments and have spread in different geographical regions in Canada. Every housing cooperative is considered a separate legal entity to provide members permanent houses. These cooperatives operate without profits. The financial advantage members achieve is the difference between what they pay to cooperatives and the bigger amount if paid to the same kind of housing in the free market. The government provides help to make rent costs affordable to families with low incomes.
The last forty years saw the cities of Brazil grow dramatically. The population doubled in the urban areas, where authorities failed to control and prevent the occupation of land, quality of construction which lacked healthy and safe design. It became imperative for programs to help the majority of the population obtain decent housing. Some of these programs offer financial aid, others plan and distribute plots, and some are designed to eliminate random housing through resettlement and migration, especially in areas where sites constitute a risk to any group of the population (United Nations Centre for Human Settlements, 1987).
Houses were constructed for people through the process of cooperative building and other programs aimed at the development of settlements with basic services. Some organizations assisted in the form of designs for the home as required by the families, and supports local authorities through partnerships that exempt people from technical and administrative fees.
