Stress at a place of work is a complex psychological metaphor that needs proper conceptualization, but for that, it is required to know the parent construct behind it - stress. Stress is known as the transformation in the mental as well as the physical state of a person in correspondence to certain situations that impose a threat or challenge in front of the person. Stress can be helpful to people to induce them to achieve their goals and overcome challenging situations. The stress bearers, however, define distress, as those situations of stress that are appraised negatively.
Distress can become onerous resulting in emotional anguish and physical sickness (Colligan, Higgins, 2005, pp. 90). Bootstrapping technological progress has been instrumental in accelerating the pace of the present age work environment in the era of globalization, which helps to make rapid progressive strides towards the newer business trends of the market. The most well-known archetype is the manufacturing industry, which is a conglomeration of various people, technology, and diverse communications.
The progress made by the manufacturing sector in light of the present day is an enviable feat by itself. Due to this newly found skillfulness, employees working in the manufacturing sector have to work under extreme pressure zones. Working in shifts is not new to the operations of the manufacturing industries. Shift work, although essential to increase productive capacity and ensuring competent utilization of costly equipment, also have many negative effects on the motivation of the employees like that of sleep, health as well as social disorders (Slomp, Suresh, n.d, 3). There is no proper definition of shift work, but it generally implies work that is scheduled outside the usual daytime office hours where there may be the process of handover of duty of one person or a workgroup to another.
In this process of work one worker usually replaces another on the same work within a time period of 24 hours.
