Very many great leaders from all over the world have left their mark on human civilization and cultural environments around the world differ (Polelle, 2008, Pp. xi – xxi). Thus, it is unrealistic to expect that by examining only three of the great leaders of the historical past with three of the great leaders of the modern world it will be possible to present highly reliable answers about either the evolution of expectations associated with leadership through the ages. Cultural contexts and the requirements of a group subject to forces that impinge on it vary across a time and geographical spread.
Thus, it is not possible to suggest that comparing only three leaders of the past with three leaders of the modern age will present universal insights. However, it is possible to see further by standing on the shoulder of giants and this means that the proposed research is likely to be worth the effort, even if a focus exists on three leaders from history and three leaders of the modern era, with many other great leaders remaining absent from the canvas. Chapter 1, which is the first chapter of this dissertation, presents a discussion about leadership and the need for comparing leaders from the past with the leaders of the modern age.
This chapter presents the objectives of the research project together with what is included in this dissertation. The next chapter, Chapter 2, presents a discussion about the three selected leaders from history and the attributes these leaders possessed that could present a basis for comparison and generalization. The discussion in Chapter 3 relates to the three selected modern leaders and their attributes that are useful for a comparison between leaders from history and leaders of the modern age.
Chapter 4 compares leaders from history with leaders of today to present useful findings that represent the outcomes derived from this research study.
