Abu Dhabi National Oil Corporation (ADNOC) leads the oil and gas extractive industries of UAE and is locus of this study. It focused oil and gas operations, distribution, including the hydrocarbons industry (ADNOC, 2009). It is currently a group of companies that is staking on ADNOC for Distribution (ADNOC-FOD), Abu Dhabi Drilling Chemicals and Products (ADDCAP), Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Company (GASCO), Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company (ADGAS), Abu Dhabi National Tanker Company (ADNATCO), Abu Dhabi Petroleum Ports Operating Company (ADPPOC), the Liquefied Gas Shipping Company Ltd (LGSC), the National Drilling Company (NDC), the National Marine Services Company (NMS), Natural Gas Shipping Company (NGSCO), National Petroleum Construction Company Ltd (NPCC), the Ruwais Fertilizers Industries Ltd (FERTIL), the Abu Dhabi Polymers Company Ltd (Borouge), the Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER) and the Abu Dhabi Gas Company (ATHEER). Q3: How does it feel to be leading one of the biggest oil and gas extractive empire of the world? Ans: It’s quite a responsibility and it’s a pressure too to meet the international standard to maintain the stature and credibility of the company. We are also confronting issues about the increasing number of corrective remedies that we need to undertake to ease and strengthen out our operation. Q4: For you, what is the meaning of quality control? For me, quality control is achieving the standard level of product and services following specific requirements on dependability, satisfaction, and reliability and fiscal rate. It is concern about quality assurance and the standard limit employed to a product or service. Our quality control team works to assess problem to fix problems and to review mechanisms through structured inspections. We assess to comply with quality standards pursue corrective actions Control is done to mitigate risks and to attune our company to international standard. Q5. What process are you undergoing in managing control quality? Ans: The Company does quality control to develop trustworthiness and to learn from our experiences. We development quality control by (1) engaging stakeholders in all control and monitoring applications; (2) increasing preference for public and private companies to be socially accountable, and (3) utilizing the essence of science as capital. Following these developments, it is also widely acknowledged changes of standards on heterogeneous skills, knowledge, systems, behaviors and reflexivity, new standard for quality control and monitoring emerged as post-modern frameworks. Q6: What are the international standards that you are using? Ans: ADNOC submit for international valuation of its operation and management. The oil and gas industry has a standard quality and environmental monitoring systems (ISO 14000) and ISO 9000 compliant software to improve Manual Quality Management System Processes. ISO 14000 helped organizations improved environmental performance to increase prevention of pollution. Part of the effort to reduce the emission of pollution is by upholding ISO 9000 quality standards.We also follow on acceptable risk management model and Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). ISO 9001 certification is awarded if the following requirements are reached: maintaining of standard procedures of all key processes in the business; monitoring all processes to validate its effectiveness; documentation and keeping of all records; checking product output defects as well as the use of appropriate corrective actions when necessary; regular review of each processes and the effectiveness of quality system and facilitate continuing improvement. ISO 14000 on the other hand, regulate the environmental management in production’s operations as well as in its product quality standards. In this standard, companies are mandated of the following standards: (a) development and managing environmental policy and keeping its records; (b) organization of document control process; (c) controlling nonconformance; (d) managing implementation and reporting of corrective/preventive action (CAPA); (e) documentation of management review of EMS; (f) facilitation of communications; (g) managing capability building implementation and documentation; and (h) maintaining an ISO-compliant environmental management system (EMS). ISO 14000 cover EMS standards ISO 14001 2004 and ISO 14004 2004. ISO 14001 2004 deals with EMS requirements while ISO 14004:2004 deals with EMS guidelines. ISO 1400 also include labeling, performance evaluations, lifecycle analysis, communication and auditing—all relate to environmental management. Companies who are able to follow these systems were able to reduce risk and liability; improves environmental performance; enhanced efficacy for savings; reduce the cost of emissions, discharges, waste handling, and disposal; and save costs by making the workplace risk-free. ISO 19011 on the other hand is an international standard with frameworks in managing audit, programmes, conducting quality management system audits and environmental management system audits as well as guidance on the competence of quality and environmental management system auditors. Q7: So what is the stature of your company’s QC now? Ans: Ah, QC management is a continuing process. We are deeply concern on incidences and problems that require corrective and protective measures. We have also deep concern on the increasing number of our workers who died while in the course of our work. We are remedying this though as this will affect all of us and our company. We share bereavement with the families whose head of the family return home to God due to these incidences. The assessment however mentioned that these incidences are low based on allowable percentage of risk. We are also improving our infrastructures and in managing our workforce by improving their capacity to risk reduction. Q8: Do you love your work here? Ans: I have served this company for years and working to ensure quality management for this company has become a habit. Working for quality has become a part of me. This company brings meaning to my life and I enjoy seeing my people in deep passion of service to improve our system. Ans: Sherif Al Olama. I am the Vice President- Area Engineering Manager in Sahel, Asab and Shah (SAS) Fields. Q2: Tell us about your designation? Ans: My office is concern on the construction, maintenance, repair and improvement of our facilities in the fields. Q3: What is your concept of quality control? Ans: Adding to the information earlier discussed, we also relied on the competence of ADNOC Group HSE Steering Committee (AGHSESC) tasked to monitor all environmental quality control. It is composed of Environment Sub-Committee; the Oil Spill and Crisis Management Sub-Committee; the Safety Sub-Committee and the Occupational Health Sub-Committee. They are also in-charge of risk assessments; business interruption and liability studies; external and internal audits; technical Assessments including HSEIAs, Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRAs), Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOPs); and Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems. These days, we are challenged at reducing the emission of the smokes that was perceived by environmentalists as disastrous to nature and to climate. We have conducted several performance and quality audit to reduce the problems that we are confronting. We wanted to improve our facilities too that will attune to standards for environmental protection. We are even protecting some marine sanctuaries to share our part for ecological protection. Q4: Is your office also concern on performance management? Ans: Yes, because we wanted to ensure durability and preservation of pipes, valves, fittings, GRE and accessories. We wanted to see our engineers and workers do all the measures and analyze situation for improvement of our systems and services. The structure too intends to establish indicators, monitor their performances and ensure that appropriate actions are taken. We also ensure that performances are appraised for validation. These companies tow inline with the international standards to ensure that we are ale to protect leaking systems and the like. This means we provide ample attention to engineering-related and infrastructure problems. We wanted to enforce genuine safety and happiness for everyone. Q5: How does your company maintain its stature and leverage in the international market? Ans: I am in agreement to an economist name Michael Porter who believed that production can be done at a low cost by maintaining international standard. We perform our tasks to meet targets, hence we set priorities and strategies at all level. All plans are crafted with sustainability in mind and of enjoying long-term advantage. We create opportunities much as we enjoy potential opportunities for development. We believe on responsible competition and that tapping our natural resources should be done only be competent human resources so that we can improve and develop areas with due care and diligence. Observe too that we are using imported and state of the art facilities for our extraction, production and exploration for efficiency. We build for growth by stimulating investment for in infrastructure and in creating favorable business. Our people are enjoying good salaries, benefits and fringe investments to facilitate high performance too. We are stringent with our policies though we exercise flexibility too.
