The novel Fight Club describes the role and importance of the American culture in life of ordinary citizens and their life struggle. Focusing on questions of individual rights and "sexual liberation," and taking the autonomous, liberal subject for granted, it is realistic in its thrust and, to that extent, is clearly an extension of the social politics of the 1990s.
