The environmental is not more safe compared to the way it was long ago before globalization processes started. Engineering as a profession has help the society to solve problems using scientific principles protection (Masud & Akhtaruzzaman, Bari & Anwar, 2011). Therefore engineers shoud ensure the environmental concerns are dealt with appropriate to create an enabling and suastainable environment to live in. Engineers have continued to play this role to ensure they protect the environment. Engineers have also plaid a towards creating a sustainable environment through coming up with plans which can help address environment protection (Sharon, 1996). These plans include inventions of analytical instruments and tools which can help address environmental problems, transformation of energy system by inventing low carbon fuel and renewable energy sources, inventing of the ultra efficient engines to help in reducing emission in transport sector aand through creations of efficient building designs (Sharon, 1996). To sum up the role behind engineers in commining up with these initiative they have contributed a lot towards addressing environmental concerns in the world. Introduction Human activities have been a major cause of environmental degradation. There has been widespread concern for environmental protection to curb global warming. Engineering is a profession with professional responsibilities to the society. They help the society to solve problems using scientific principle protection (Masud & Akhtaruzzaman, Bari & Anwar, 2011). Engineers have a role in environmental protecting. Due to current environmental problems, engineers have been working in close collaboration with ecologists and other environmental scientists. This is especially when engineering projects are being designed so as to minimise the impacts they have on the environment. There are also environmental engineers who play a major role in environmental protection (Masud et al., 2011). This report explains why the environment is a concern for the engineers, what can be done about it and the role of an engineer. Environment and engineering Environment is a major concern for the engineers. They are using the engineering principles to improve on the natural resources, clean up pollution and create an enabling environment for both human beings and other organisms (Xenia, 2014). Engineers deals with tasks such as extraction of resources from an environment and industrial processes which may emit waste to the environment (Xenia, 2014). It is upon the environmental engineers to ensure that all natural resources are clean from any waste that may be dumped into them. They are laying out guidelines that will help keep our environment stable from any industrial pollution (Xenia, 2014). Engineers are involved in developing projects which may have adverse impacts on the environment such as hydropower stations (Xenia, 2014). This is another way that specifies the role behind engineering to ensure projects are undertaken seriously and they do not inhibit any chances of faults in the long run of their operations (Xenia, 2014). The results to be obtained from these projects should depict how they will contribute to environmental sustainability. Therefore, engineering is an important part in the environment field. Environmental degradation reduces quality of life and has negative impacts in engineering projects. Therefore, it is part of engineering for environmentalists to observe the core principles of engineering in coming up with new inventions that will facilitate the eradication of environmental degradation components that reduces the quality of life (Xenia, 2014). Engineering has facilitated this through inventions of the green technology that has led to a reduction in pollution rate and also in global warming (Xenia, 2014). This invention provides a link between engineering and environment to come up with a sustainable output. Engineering projects cannot help the society if they have negative impacts on the environment. This is true; once engineers have brought up new inventions that affect the environment like industries that emit a lot of toxic fumes they will not be helping the society at all (Xenia, 2014). Engineering concepts and projects need to provide ways that will create an enabling environment that will better the lives of a society not degrading them through pollution. Therefore, as part of creating a sustainable environment in the society, engineering projects have to focus on the environment concerns, hence this makes the environment a major concern for engineers (Xenia, 2014). What engineers can do Due to the increased importance of environment to engineers, they can come up with plans which can help address environmental protection. These plans are therefore explaining as to what extend engineers can do to contribute to the environment (Sharon, 1996). Engineers can contribute a lot towards environmental concern through coming up with analytical instruments and tools which can help in addressing environmental problems. These instruments can help in analysing and determining which gases are toxic to the environment and they require proper handling when dumping them. For example, engineers can develop more on the green engineering technology that came up as a result of the concerns regarding global climatic change, increased government laws and elevated energy prices (Sharon, 1996). Therefore, engineers can improve these green technology developed to lower toxic gas emissions, create viable renewable energy and better the global ecosystem in order to protect the environment (Sharon, 1996). The transformation of energy systems by inventing low carbon fuel and renewable energy sources can be the work of the greatest minds of engineers. High carbon fuel has polluted the environment for much longer time (Sharon, 1996). It is from this experience that engineers have to come up together to invent a low carbon fuel that will not cause pollution to the environment in large quantities like the available carbon fuels (Xenia, 2014). These carbon fuels have polluted the environment and also they are the cause of increased global warming in the world. On the other hand, renewable energy is to be developed in order to eradicate waste from industries that pollute the environment. It is through renewable energy that engineers can succeed in keeping our ecosystem and environment clean and sustainable (Xenia, 2014). Engineers can transform energy systems through inventing renewable energy and low carbon fuels. Inventing ultra efficient engines will help in reducing emission in the transport sector. Therefore, engineers have to develop these new engines that will help in reducing emissions from vehicles and other form of transport that uses fuel for locomotion (Xenia, 2014). This will be one type of invention that has been regarded as clean technology since it will help in passing over the environmentalists’ concerns in having a free and sustainable environment. Inventing ultra efficient engines will play a crucial role in meeting the objectives of environmental concerns of the whole world (Xenia, 2014). There will be less pollution arising from the transportation sector, hence engineers will have succeeded in coming up with new inventions in with the invention of ultra efficient engines to reduce emissions (Xenia, 2014). Lastly, engineers can to environmental concerns through developing efficient building designs that can be adopted by many developers in the world. These building designs will use less natural recourses and they will not contribute largely to pollution and environmental degradation (Sharon, 1996). These will be the building designs that are observing the policies environmentalist have always fought for. Cutting down trees in one way of going against the policies, hence engineers have to develop new building designs that use fewer natural resources to help eradicate environmental degradation (Sharon, 1996). To sum up, these are initiatives that can help engineers address the environmental concern. Role of engineers to environment Eradicating air pollution Air pollution is a major threat for sustainable environment. It has been the role of engineers to come up with sustainable developments that will facilitate and enable individuals all over the globe in satisfying their basic requirements and also to ensure they are capable to live a quality and better lives (Australian conservation Foundation, 1991). This will ensure the future generation has been catered for it their lives will not be compromised at all. Therefore, professional engineers are expected to play a leadership role to come up with sustainability developments in the world to overcome the existing global challenges affecting the environment such as environmental pollution, ecosystem damages, and degradation of resources and population growth which has become more rapid (Australian conservation Foundation, 1991). Engineers should also help in coming up with ways to reduce emissions which affects quality of air. This role has been a major concern to most of the environmentalists in the world today. Due to the rise of globalisation, many industries have affected the environment in releasing toxic gases to the environment (Australian conservation Foundation, 1991). Scientists have warned against these toxic gases that have caused global warming in the world. If industries continue to release untreated gases and residue to the environment the levels of global warming will increase (Australian conservation Foundation, 1991). Therefore, engineers have to come up with ways and processes that will help in curbing emissions of toxic fumes which have caused environmental degradation and bad quality of air. Engineers are also to ensure that their activities do not contribute to air pollution. Since engineers play a role in coming up with new components and system in the world, they have been urged to develop new components that are free from polluting the environment (Australian conservation Foundation, 1991). It is from the engineers that we experience and foresee the existence of industries in the world. Since their invention, they have contributed a lot to air pollution, which affects the environment. It is evident that engineers have been given another role to play in that their innovations and implementations of projects do not contribute to air pollution in the world (Australian conservation Foundation, 1991). Therefore, Engineers have the capability to work in close collaboration with other scientists to address air pollution. Provision of safe drinking water Engineers can help in ensuring there is safe drinking water, especially in the developing world. Scientists have proved that water is life; hence there is a need to supply fresh and safe water to all citizens in the world (Sharon, 1996). This role can be achieved by the engineers by ensuring that they work with other sectors such as agriculture in ensuring there is adequate clean water. The ministry of agriculture has come up with many ways that has led to the production of water (Sharon, 1996). They have dug up dams, wells and boreholes to help with the irrigation practices. Engineers can collaborate with the agricultural sectors and implement methods that will ensure irrigation water drawn from the water sources can also be converted to safe drinking water for human consumption (Sharon, 1996). Through this, engineers would have created an avenue to provide a safer method in providing safe drinking water, especially in developing countries that are inaccessible to new technological inventions to draw safe drinking water. On the other hand, engineers can also work with relevant authorities in coming up with guidelines on clean water and waste water management. These guidelines will play a great role in ensuring that there is an implementation of the strategies that will help in keeping clean water and at the same time practising waste water management process (Cadambi, 2001). Engineers are the world’s greatest minds in coming up with new ideas. It is from this point of view that engineers can come up with guideline after a study on how they can ensure there is existence of clean water supply in developing countries (Cadambi, 2001). The results corresponding to the study will enumerate the strategic guidelines for the authorities in the forefront fighting for good environmental programs to be put in place. Clean water and waste water management will create a better enabling and sustainable environment to live in (Cadambi, 2001). Coming up with new technologies that can help in upgrading water safety, monitoring and maintenance will create an enabling environment too (Cadambi, 2001). Human being do require safe and clean drinking water and it’s the role of engineers to come up with new technologies that will ensure there is upgrades for water safety in the world. Also, engineers are the one to maintain these technological inventions (Cadambi, 2001). When there is a failure on any of the machines, engineers can hurriedly correct them since machines are always prone to damages. Therefore, there is a schedule to be developed that will facilitate monitoring of the water system by the engineers (Cadambi, 2001). Failure to upgrade water safety systems, monitoring and maintenance practices by the engineers they will be rendering the environment to be at risk not to be sustainable. It is good to create an enabling environment. Engineers are also entitled in providing a helping hand in waste water management, infrastructure and planning. Infrastructure and proper planning methods are the duties of engineers towards creating an enabling environment (Cadambi, 2001). They are able to analyse the all the best strategies that can be used to develop infrastructural developments for waste water management processes (Cadambi, 2001). Therefore, engineers have a role to play towards creating a sustainable environment by ensuring that they have come up with proper planning, infrastructural developments and better waste water management that will not pollute the environment but rather provide safe drinking water (Cadambi, 2001). Eradication of land pollution Land pollution is caused by disposal of substances in water, air and soil, which degrades it (Masud et al., 2011). It is therefore a duty for the engineers to play to ensure the disposal of substances in soil, air and water do not degrade land hence causing environmental pollution. In order to eradicate this predicament engineers should come up with pollution prevention mechanisms. According to National Instruments (2014), these pollution prevention mechanisms that engineers should come up with include legislation, financial disincentives and incentives, research, education and research, changes in consumer behaviour and changes to production processes. These mechanisms once adopted they will eradicate land pollution, hence creating an enabling environment a great role played out by engineers (National Instruments, 2014). Innovation of waste management and coming up with ways to manage hazardous waste is another role that engineers need to play towards creating a sustainable environment (Cadambi, 2001). With their varying skills in various sectors, coming up with proper and efficient waste management innovations will contribute to the sustainability of the environment. The creation of waste management systems will make sure that no hazardous waste will be dumped in water, air or soil (Cadambi, 2001). Dumping of untreated waste will cause harm hence degrading the environment; hence coming up with innovations on the part of engineers would help a lot in combating the release of hazardous waste through treatment by waste management systems invented (Cadambi, 2001). Therefore, engineers have to ensure their activities do not pose danger to land pollution. Conclusion Environment is a major concern for engineers. They have a role in protecting and enhancing the environment. This is especially when engineering projects are being designed so as to minimise the impacts they have on the environment. They have been used to improve on the natural resources, clean up pollution and create an enabling environment for both human beings and other organisms (Sharon, 1996). Therefore, in recognition of the great achievement engineering has done towards achieving a sustainable environment it needs appraisal. Environment and engineering principles have laid out principles that each and every one needs to follow to create an enabling environment.
