Film Review of the Documentary Urbanized
A notable size of the world’s population lives in the urban areas, and therefore, positive measures should be taken so that future lifestyle of this planet is planned. Gary Hustwit, the director of the film, Urbanized, presents how the cities’ population continues to grow with immediate need for device innovative strategies, which provides for the decreasing natural resources. In his documentary, he describes some of the cities in the world that have poor planning, which led to development of slums encouraging on the need for urbanization through proper planning. This describes the condition of urban poverty. As a result, the slums occupy the larger part in many of the cities. Example is Mumbai in India where one toilet is shared by 600 people. An approximation of 60% of the populations lives in slums. The failure to use modern technology contributes to a violation of human dignity. In reference to Hustwit’s film, Urbanized, this paper presents in depth the significance of urbanization through proper planning in efforts to realize modern cities, giving a presentable picture of the planet earth and hence contribute to the world’s economic growth.

Arguably, this film gives an introduction of both the urban design and ideas on proper planning of the cities, leaving the main argumentative question of how the future cities will appear. One assertion is certain that every urban planner must emphasize on architectural designs. Although this documentary tries to reinforce it, the importance of the present growth of cities, it is important to evaluate the progress so far. Indeed, understanding the growth of cities will help to deal with challenges affecting the urban centers today.
It is critical to understand the lesson from the Hustwit‘s film on how to get along with different professionals such as politicians, urban planners, architects and even academicians. These people are key players in the growth of cities and if overlooked it is possible that the future of our cities might not be up to expectations. This is supported by the film when the director presents how they are the right people to make cities manageable and compact. The contribution each individual makes to the growth of the city is significant. In this sense, it is critical to factor in every stakeholder in coming up with the best design that will see the development of a good city. In essence, the brainstorming of different ideas helps solicit a valid initiative. It is for this reason that the movie director creates scenes of designers and planners trying to decide the best way forward.
It is crucial to note that there might be a problem when the old building owners rebuild to cope with the competition from the new designs. However, the owners must understand and emphases the fact that putting into consideration the new designs will go a long way towards ensuring the expected future of the planet earth. Sure to note, indifference in thinking among the public and the private constrain city's development today. Just as the film presents, planners must put into consideration every individual, poor or rich, to ensure that their issues pertaining city development are considered. To make a clarification, this is evident in the film the director present how a city like Brasilia was not habitable because its road planning was done without considering pedestrians.
To make this planet meet the future expectation, it is significant to note that the urban designing needs participation of all citizens. With a proper planning, cities will be kept intact and accommodating the increasing population which is estimated to be 75 percent of the world’s population by 2050 will be possible. The urban living population has risen faster over a period of time.
The movie brings viewers to a critical evaluation of its significance. Every individual focused on a bright overview of our cities must watch this film. It gives the viewer insight of the expected future, enlightening viewers on the significance of urbanization. For instance, it is worth arguing that technological innovation will punctuate our cities, marked by notable economies and trade. With growth in the economy, a bright future of every nature is guaranteed, the first and crucial fruit of urbanization. Further still, with urbanization allows for easier and smooth flow of information. With such a clear communication network, all sectors supported by the communication industry will not be at stake, but assured of realizing economic goals. Urbanization and education work hand in hand. As such, encouraged planning and hence urbanization will see the setting of educational institutions in the right places and in the right manner and hence the expected outcome is for obvious reasons positive. Progress in the education sector is a long term benefit for those venturing into new businesses. This is because such individuals are offered with a true measure of stability. These are factors that need to be put in the forefront to ensure that that long-term goals set are realized.
With the above stated factor in consideration, it is clear that planning to achieve the expected goals is a sensitive task. This is because if done poorly, cities become congested resulting to poor sanitation, slums, and high rates of crimes. On the other hand, proper security and infrastructure prevails in good planning. Like in the film, a former Bogota Mayor is shown talking about automobile parking, which he says if it was properly planned, it could improve the transportation. Although the world is full of inequality, violence, and health hazards, the main problems facing the world is lack of proper planning, and the film depicts that the drama is not over until the last innovator is out of the building.
In conclusion, evaluating the essentiality of a well planned city to the future of the planet is critical. Urbanized is an educative film that leaves the viewers with well informed of the necessities of a well planned city for it to be able to execute its mandates. It is true that political and economic affairs are carried out in urban/cities and this affair not only affects the cities themselves, but also the world. Therefore, it is important to mention and address some of the changes affecting the urban today. To realize the future expectations of our cities, planning and valid architectural designs will see city developers go a long way towards realizing the expected future appearance of this planet.
