Introduction Chocolate is a sweet delicacy that has gained much popularity among various persons across the world.In particular, chocolate consumption is mainly common among children and ladies with men preferring it mainly during important occasions such as wedding celebrations and anniversaries celebrations (Januszewska & Viaene, 2002). Many people, ladies and children like consuming chocolate owing to its sweet composition. Earlier on, chocolate consumption was shunned due to its high-fat content. Many people associated chocolate consumptions with acne, caries, obesity, coronary artery diseases, high blood pressure as well as other critical illnesses such as diabetes (Macdonald, 2004). As a result, its consumption faced the major set back in its making history. Many physicians, as well as nutritionists, warned their patients against consuming large amounts of chocolate. Recent discoveries on biologically active phenol compounds such as cocoa that are currently used in making chocolate has widely changed the perception of the society about the same. In relation to this recent breakthrough extensive and intensive research has been stimulated into looking at the effects of chocolate consumption on ageing, oxidative stress, blood pressure regulation, and in controlling atherosclerosis (Matsui, Ito, Nishimura al, 2005). This research investigates the association between chocolate consumption and the occurrence of acne among college girls from Oklahoma State University.
Research objective and hypotheses
This research seeks to establish the contributions of chocolate in the occurrence of acne among college girls from Oklahoma State University. The research also seeks to validate the hypothesis that chocolate consumption is the major cause of acne among college girls from Oklahoma State University. The null hypothesis guiding this research is that chocolate consumption is not linked to the occurrence of Acne among college girls from Oklahoma State University.
Research methodology
50 female students were used in this experiment. The population was picked at random and divided into five groups (again at random). Four groups will be subjected to consuming milked chocolate at the rates of 10g, 20g, 30g, and 40g respectively. The fifth group will the control group and will be subjected to 0g of chocolate consumed per day. The experiment will be done mainly during the afternoon hours when most of the students are through with their classes and are relatively willing to consume the food. The relationship between chocolate consumption and the occurrence of acne will be determined by observing the level of sebum in the sample population. According to Macdonald, (2004), clear skins have an average sebum reading of about 200 mg/cm2 while acne skin has an average sebum reading of about 300 mg/cm2. Data analysis and interpretation was conducted using ANOVA and correlation analysis to establish the associations between the dependent and the independent variable in the experiment.
Results and discussion
ANOVA analysis on chocolate amounts consumed by each group and sebum levels recorded indicated a strong significant relation between chocolate consumption and the occurrence of acne with a p- value of 0.002. Regression analysis on the four sets at 95% confidence level and alpha- to- enter and alpha- to remove at 0.15 presented p- values of 0.002, 0.000, 0.000, and 0.000 for groups 1- 4 respectively. Based on the regression results above, it was concluded that there is a strong significant effect of chocolate consumption on the development of acne in ladies thus validating the alternative hypothesis. The mean sebum levels for the groups in each set were recorded as 256.45, 267.56, 274.83, and 285.37 mg/cm2 for groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. The readings on the control experiment indicated sebum reading of 203 mg/cm2 indicating that they have a clear skin. The null hypothesis was disapproved based on the correlation analysis conducted at a confidence level of 95%. It was, therefore, concluded that consumption of chocolate leads to the occurrence of acne in female students from Oklahoma State University.
In conclusion, it is good to reiterate in this part that chocolate consumption and the development of acne especially among women has raised a lot of concern. Researches have been carried out to try and establish the validity of this argument without specific answers given. This research has plainly established that chocolate consumption has a significant relationship with the occurrence of acne among ladies.
