Where have all the Cod Gone? A Response Paper Industrialization and the widespread cropping up of Global markets proves that Atlantic cod fishing (Gadus morhua) has become a big time lucrative business and this is seen by the increased number of fishermen who have joined the business. Researchers have found that being “batch- spawners”, with the female cod releasing only 5 to 25% of its eggs at a time, (Assessment and Update Report on Gadus Morhua (Atlantic Cod), 2003; Rowe and Hutchings, 2004) greater care has to be taken for its survival.
The primary source of economic wealth in the area, is the successful commercial fishery industry that supply cod for human consumption and the liver of the cod is used to make cod liver oil used as a supplement for vitamins. (Assessment and Update Report on Gadus Morhua (Atlantic Cod), 2003. However, greed from over fishing led to the rapid decline in cod population and left many with huge financial burdens.
The chosen topic is very interesting and serves to create awareness in the common man. Many of the points were enlightening as it gave us details on how cod fishing used to be and presently how it has declined. The regulations that were put in place after the cod population dwindled drastically were not successful. I feel that if fishing interventions are put in place and good legislation introduced, then there are chances that the Atlantic cod fishing industry could be revived once again.

Gone With The Wind

...Gone with the Wind One of the dangers of a changing social world is the difficulty that individuals have in trying to decide whether to associate themselves with the past or the present. A large part of this decision is made based upon whether the lifestyle of the individual was more enjoyable in the past or if it holds greater promise and comfort now, in the present. For those whose lives were better in the past, the tendency is to mythologize it, to make it seem something better than it actually was. This is the case in Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone With the Wind. In this story, the main character, Scarlett O’Hara, must come to grips with the loss of her childhood wealth and...

...of the dwindling stock of cod from the fishing grounds. According to the Scientific American article cod populations are recovering with populations higher than they’ve been since the early-1990s and the weights of individual fish on the rise. This is due to there still being enough cod, haddock and redfish around to generate the eggs and larvae to recover and the factory being shut down for two decades giving the ecosystem time to reorganize and work itself out. However the article notes that not all ecosystems are able to recover. Decline in cod production from 1968-2008 must have led to an increase in markets for other fish species...

In light of this fact, many politicians may have had stakes in the fishing industry and therefore act as impediments to any regulations seeking to control the fishing trends in the country. Further, the politics surrounding the phenomenon may have led to subjectivity in the analysis of the matter, leading to the implementation of weak resolutions that are out of touch with reality.
