?Conference and Event Evaluation Report - Australia Health Conference Introduction The Australian health conference is conducted every two yearsby the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. AIHW is the government body which governs the health and welfare statistics of the people of the country. This agency of Australian government provides information on health and welfare to the citizens with the help of numerous data and statistics .The information consist of strategies, decisions and information about the agency’s policies and services The agency works in collaboration with state, territory and governments’ housing, health and community services and collects information and data from them. The motto of the agency is to provide better information and data to the public to enhance the health and living standards of the public. AIHW is a statutory authority and is answerable to the Parliament and works under the provision of Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Act 1987. The AIHW makes an elaborate national health report every two years which contains a wide range of information about health services, injury, diseases and health work force. This time the AIHW’s report release and conference fell on the same day which is 23rd of June 2010. According to AIHW(2010)“At the pre-conference dinner, 2010 Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry described his work in the field of mental health and in particular the prevalence of mental illness among young people”. The focus point of the conference was that the AIHW should create a transparency within the healthcare system to make the policy more comprehensive for the public Literature Review: Australia Health Conference 2010 Australia is rated as one the healthiest nations in the world and their health awareness is of high quality when compared to other developed nation. The country was rated at third position for the life expectancy rate and health quotient among the developed countries. At the conference were present various health experts, high ranked officials of the nation and media persons to overview the health and welfare agenda of the body. According to AIHW (2010)“Launching the report, Minister Roxon said Australia’s Health 2010 was ‘a very valuable analysis of where we are as a nation, what we're doing well, where we need to pick up our game and the trends showing us the risks on the horizons that of course any smart government will plan for”. During the conference, it was understood that the death rate and major health problems such as cardiovascular disease, lung disease, asthma, cancer and injuries were decreasing .The report of the AIHW showed that the health of the citizens of Australia was really improving and there is more space for the country to develop in health sector. However, the conference also highlighted on the fact that the country needs to focus on certain areas of concern like obesity and diabetes. As per AGDHA(2010)“For the first time since 1995 the 2007-08 National Health Survey (NHS) has measured the height, weight, hip and waist circumference of respondents aged 5 years or more. Results from this survey reveal that in 2007-08, 61.4% of the Australian population are either overweight or obese” The health report of the AIHW shows that there can bring about considerable change in the obesity and overweight issues by bringing about change in the lifestyle of Australian citizen. The life style of a person includes their food habits, physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking habits. According to the AIHW, the diabetes is one of the main issues prevalent among Australians which needs dire attention. Another important issue which was highlight in the conference was the prevalence of mental disorder among young generation of Australia. AIHW(2010)states that“An estimated 1 in 4 young people had experienced a mental health disorder in the 12 months before the survey—a higher proportion than any other age group. And in the estimates of disease burden for 2010, mental disorders account for about half of the burden in young people.” The conference also pointed out that the cancer elevated in 2006 as compared to the year 2010.At present cancer is the biggest threat the country face according to the Health conference officials. AIHW(2010)states that, “While governments discuss reforms to the funding and responsibility matrix of the Australian health system, the overall health of the population responds slowly, reflecting the variety of determinants and the changing service system. The information in this report provides an objective measure of accountability for the health of Australians; a touchstone for effectiveness”. Evaluating of AIHW The evaluation of the health conference is done on three basis as follows: Effectiveness of the health program Efficiency of the health program Acceptance by the community Effectiveness of the health program: The AIHW is very informative and had made improvement in their health publication to provide a better insight to the public on their strategies. They conduct appropriate surveys and get opinion from the citizens to evaluate their services and facilities. According to AIHW(2010)“One of the ways we do this is to ask our web visitors to complete a short voluntary feedback survey for selected AIHW reports. We use your comments to improve our publications as a whole”. Moreover, they give due consideration and respect to the aboriginals and tribes of the country and think greatly for their health and welfare. They approach the citizens directly and get information about their lifestyle, health status; eating habits and disease history .Such an action allow them to take decisions by studying and analyzing the real problems faced by the citizens and tribes of the country. Efficiency of the health program The efficiency of this health care program is high as they access all the areas of the country and work hard to achieve their aim of improving the health status of the citizens. They focus on all age groups and gender and consider the overall health status of the people in the country to analyze the health problems faced by the citizens. They concentrate on indigenous group, veterans, and children and disable people and study their health issue and provide care and benefits. They have health services and health workforce which operates in a planned manner. They aim on tackling the chronic illnesses suffered by the people of the country and give them guidance to fight the disease. As per AIHW(2010) “ Two further things should be taken into account in using this framework and its parts. The first is to consider the features and needs of certain groups—not just of individuals the population as a whole—in terms of their health, their determinants and the care they receive. The second is to remember that Australia’s health can be viewed as reflecting the performance of society as a whole, not just of the health system.” Acceptance by the community Many factors influence the way in which the public or community accept the health services and information provided by the AIHW.The acceptance factor of the services provided vary according to difference groups and status of people. Largely it can be see that the rich and middle class are more accessible to such services due to their education and technological facilities. It is experienced that he poor and aboriginal tribes due to poor socio – economical background remain away from services provided by government. There need to be more education and awareness among indigenous group to allow them to study and analyze data and information provided by AIWS Assessment of the Health conference in relation to criteria The Australian heath conference is a report card upon the health and welfare status of the country. The prominent journalists, medical experts and people from other health sectors and government joined the conference to evaluate the performance of country with relate to health and welfare. AIHW(2010)claims that,“Speakers at the conference and launch included the Deputy Privacy Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim, who spoke about the challenges surrounding privacy, research and e-health.” The conference mainly focused on chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, mental disease and obesity which the country is mainly victim of. In the conference the authorities have reported full fledged statistics about the diseases like cancer, mental disorder and obesity. They have reported that the lung cancer is a more dangerous disease suffered by the country and immediate step has to be taken to over come it. The conference also reported that dementia is widely seen among old age people. The conference have given so appropriate statistics about the diseases which made easy for the experts to discuss on health issues and point out the areas the agency needs to improve on. The statistics and information collected by the body shows that they have done serious effort on their strategies and policies. The conference asserted that Australia is a healthy nation but had to do more of improvement on certain areas to achieve their real objective. The conference has stated that there had been a considerable decrease in cancer rates, fatal injuries and death rates. However also suggested that their aim of a healthy nation is not yet achieved as diabetes, lung cancer and mental disorders are on rise. Some concerns raised in the conference were the type 1 disease is rising and obesity on high level among old and young people. They also raised concern as to the rise of sexual diseases like Chlamydia on rise and young and old has to be made more aware of this disease. The authorities of the body was doubtful about the health status of indigenous group in the country as their socio- economical status were low compared to normal citizen. They explained that indigenous people suffered a lot and faced more fatal issues related to diseases.Morevover; drug and alcohol abuse was also a point of discussion in the conference. The Conference authorities also analyzed the cost and budget involved and reviewed whether they are in limits related to finance. They also analyzed the hospital service, spending structure of the people, GP activities and so on. This shows that the conference covered more or less all points concerned to health and gave chance to people in the conference to raise query and give suggestions. Summary The main concern of the AIHW is the complete health and proper awareness about diseases among the Australian population. The authorities have provided a well -balanced and in depth statistics and information about the health status of different communities living in the country. The conference have highlighted that the overall health of the Australians are improving and people are healthier than most of the developed and underdeveloped countries. The main concerns were about the rising cancer rates, obesity, diabetes and mental disorders among the Australians. The indigenous people like the aborigines and tribes were closely monitored by the authorities as they have shown much statistics related to their death and illnesses. The authorities gave much space for the health experts, media persons and other officials to raise issues and concerns related to their facts and figures. They were transparent about their expenses and cost effectiveness and allowed the public to know more about the budget and working plans They project more concern about the people in rural and urban areas which shows the justice in their working strategy. Suggestions The conference has to describe more ways to tackle the obesity issue prevalent in the country among the young and the old aged. The members of indigenous group should also should be invited to t he conference to give them more insight in to the health issues faced by the country. The authorities of the conference should attempt to involve more of physicians, professionals from health sectors to widen their prospects. The conference should be more detailed and elaborate as to the real problems faced by the AIHW body. The media and journalist should give be given more opportunity to interact with AIHW officials to gather more information about their strategies and goals in future. The conference should lay more importance on future plans and objectives regarding health issues of the country. Conclusion Health is of primary concern to any country and in this matter Australia is rated very high. They give highest priority to the health and life of their citizen and make all the efforts to guarantee more health and life expectancy to their citizens. As per AIHW(2010)”This 12th biennial health report is the nation's premier source of statistics and informed commentary on: determinants of health and keys to prevention; diseases and injury; how health varies across population groups; health across the life stages; health services, expenditure and workforce; the health sector's performance”. According to the revelation of the conference the country is one of the healthiest nations of the world and offers best health and care facilities to its citizen. AIHI (2010)refers that, “The report shows that Australia is one of the healthiest nations in the world, with most Australians generally have good health and access to a range of good health care services, but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to have much poorer health than the general population”. This exhibits the concerns of the body regarding the state of under-privileged groups of the country. They are more challenged to give higher health status to the whole population of the country and seemingly working hard to achieve their goal. References AIHW. (2010).
