Fairness in Sports: Sports Talk-Sports Battles
Abstract
The paper discusses on the level of fairness in sports, importance of balancing academic work with class work. The reasons as to why student-athletes fail are also discussed, and the ways to solve the problem. The paper also presents on the repercussions of not helping the student-athlete. The paper is that student-athlete has to balance her class work and field work with the help of friends, coaches, and tutors.
Introduction
Sports are crucial. Through sports, one gets a healthy body and an active mind. Also, students get scholarships through sports. Sports have provided jobs to many people for instance through NBA (Dorothy 431).People are living peacefully among themselves through sports. However, we need to admire sports as we embrace the brains of the players. The lifestyle of players and their skills ought to be respected. The quality and fairness in sports also need to be followed. The student-athlete ought to work extra hard to ensure he or she is not poor academically.
Quality and fairness in sports
Many people think integrity and quality lack in games thus making student-athlete fail academically. Equity and equality in games include self-esteem, physical health, mental health and social networking among others; it is not about tokens alone. Rewarding the best competitors and leaving the worst players without any token is not fair. Fairness deals with ensuring that the prizes given after competition are fair to all. The demand for stakes fairness ensures that there is fairness in the reward structure. People claim that the outcomes of losers and winners are not equal hence they should not be paid equally. This makes student-athletes concentrate only in the field since they know if they lose they will get nothing. However, even the losers need to be rewarded for their hard work. The prize structure needs to be for quality and fairness to be achieved (Pitney, Stuart and Parker, p.7).
Low level of academic challenge to student- athletes
It is true that student athletes are less challenged academically. This has been attributed mainly to failure from the student and sometimes failure from their tutors as seen below:
First, time management is an issue for many athlete students especially those between 18-22 years. No one fails the student to manage his or her time; it is student’s work to manage his or her time. However, many students think that it is hectic to focus on academics and to be a regular college student (Dorothy, p. 439).
Second, students do fail themselves due to hero complex. With the mentality that a student can do well in sports will make a student neglect academics leading to failure. Such students do not even look for their tutors for help thus failing academically.
Third, lack of organization on the part of students has made many athlete-students to fail academically. Tutors do encourage students to organize themselves in order to excel, but students do not take it seriously. This has been attributed to inadequate pressure at their age: eighteen to twenty-two years. Student-athlete needs to be effective and efficient.
Fourth, student athletes fail to communicate with their tutors. Some even do not note when they are suppose to be in practice, in class or a meeting. Even student-athletes who are capable fail academically due to poor communication.
Fifth, tutors do fail student-athletes by not motivating them well. Such students know their rewards from sports are huge hence focus on the games (Pitney, Stuart and Parker, p. 17). Tutors ought to pay sport-students differently since they have less time in class as compared to full-time students.
Changes that will improve the situation of student-athlete
It is true that student- athlete contributes much to his or her success hence the need for the student to work extra hard to manage both class work and field work. It is the student-athlete who has failed himself or herself. The student-athlete will make it if there is effective communication, organization, time management, adequate motivation from the tutors and when hero complexity is avoided by the student.
Also to improve the student-athlete we must check on the welfare of conference commissioners, administrators, college athlete coaches and students. All participants are included since they play a significant role to craft student-athletes (Malasarn, Bloom, and Crumpton, p. 54).
Moreover, less time to be taken in the field for practice. For example, a call for fewer football practices weekly; two or less than two live contacts helped the football-students. This will also help the student-athlete as the talent of most athletes is inborn. In addition, women pregnancies should be treated with confidentiality. Emotional support should also be given. Institution’s policy on parenting and pregnancy should be offered to help the student-athlete.
Failure to improve the situation of student-athlete
First, negligence to student-athletes will make them become academic dwarfs. This is because it will be hard for them to balance practice work, classes work, and competition. During the time for the game, even the manageable schedule for classes and training offered by coaches becomes chaotic to most students; even the bright students. Student- athletes need to learn strictly from time management to avoid being failures academically (Malasarn, Bloom, and Crumpton, p. 37).
Second, it will be hard for student-athlete to maintain scholarship if the situation of student-athlete is not. Most scholarships depend on classroom and athletic competition. Without the scholarship, some athletes could not have attended college. Anxiety and depression may result from scholarship being removed.
Third, careers may come to an end when student-athletes are not strict. Many students take sports as their careers. When they fail in games, they feel weak and ask themselves many questions. For example, “What will I do next?”
Fourth, poor relationships may also result when student-athletes are not helped (Dorothy, p. 441). This lead to conflicts with teammates and coaches. Due to such poor relationships, student-athletes will have decreased motivation thus lacking focus in competition and preparation.
Conclusion
Sports are important for everyone. A student- athlete needs to love both sports and academics. With the help of tutors, coaches and friends student-athlete can make it both in the field and in class.
