Latitude Fifty-Five as a Place for Students in the University - Essay Example

Profile One of the places that I regard an offbeat one in the University is called Latitude Fifty-Five. It is more than a college cafeteria; it is rather a student center, a place for students not only to have a meal but to spend some time relaxing, meeting with peers both during breaks and after classes, studying in a comfortable atmosphere or just playing pool or video games. In other words, personally for me, Latitude Fifty-Five is a unique location for students on campus of our University that allows spending times engaging in a wide range of different activities and bringing down stress after classes. Latitude Fifty-Five is located in the center of campus, on the second floor of the HUB, next to Subway and the Bank of America ATM; so, it is very convenient, especially when one visits it just between classes because it does not take a lot of time to get to any place on campus from there. The place itself is spacious, which means a lot of people can spend their time there all at the same time. In addition to this, spaciousness allows dividing the place into several zones where students may engage into different types of activities. The place is not very brightly lit; light comes from the huge windows, it is not enough though. The majority of zones of Latitude Fifty-Five are lit by artificial light which comes from simple and at the same time quite stylish lamps. They are in a great amount but their light is not too bright or eye-piercing, and this creates somewhat relaxing atmosphere. The walls are painted with mostly dark colors, such as dark blue and black. There are also bright spots in the interior appearance on the place, such as colorful graffiti, which are quite numerous, especially in the games zone, and just wall painted with bright colors, for example, with app-green. Overall, the atmosphere is quite pleasant and, what is of the most importance, it does not remind of the educational process, which, in my opinion, is really helpful for it gives an opportunity to chill. As it has been mentioned above, the place is divided into several zones. One of them is grill. It is a nice place for those who need a grab of a bite on campus. They serve fast food, and this is very convenient, taking into account the fact that many students visit the place during breaks, meaning they do not have enough time to have a full-course meal. There is a great number of tables in this zone, so quite a significant number of people can be there all at once. Sometimes, they are not enough though as the place gets crowded during lunch, and many students share their tables with someone else. As for the service, it is not bad considering that students serve students; they are people working for their peers, and everybody is usually friendly and helpful; this also creates a pleasant atmosphere. Latitude Fifty-Five is also a nice place to have a rest after classes. In fact, a lot of students meet there with their friends exactly for dinner after studying. There are several zones for rest at the place. First of all, there are tables for pool, quite a number of TVs situated all over the place, so one can watch whatever they like. Also, they have board games, table soccer, a darts board, video games consoles, which one can rent for free, and even karaoke. During certain evenings, tournaments for video games, board games, poker etc. are held there. As I have noticed, many students come here mostly to play pool and video games, and it is not a surprise. The place offers quite a number of pool tables available for those who wants to compete. There are also places on the couches next to the tables for those who come to watch their friend playing and chill after a long day. XBOX gaming area is also one of the favorite once among the visitors. The consoles are placed next to each other surrounded by chairs for players so that a significant number of people can play at once. In addition to this, Latitude Fifty-Five offers more than twenty games of all sorts and kinds to choose, and this also explains the gaming zone’s popularity among the visitors. As the place is spacious, a significant number of students can take part in such-like activities. In addition to this, the interior appearance of Latitude Fifty-Five is enriched by comfortable furniture. For instance, some people say the couches on the elevated floor are the most comfortable ones on the entire campus. Overall, the interior environment of the place seems to meet all the needs of the target audience. People that attend the place are common students. During lunch and dinner, they visit Latitude Fifty-Five for a meal. However, the majority of them come there to have a rest after classes, meet friends, and, of course, spend some time engaging in various activities the place offers. When I came there not as a typical customer but as an observer, the place was really packed. There were many companies of students; some of them were watching TVs, others were playing video games, pool, darts, and poker. Also, there were those who were sitting on the couches, talked, and ate; sometimes, they seemed too lazy to move. It was quite noisy there, taking into account the number of visitors and music that was playing all the time. That is why, for me personally, if one looks for a quiet spot to have a rest, Latitude Fifty-Five may not meet their needs, at least in the evenings. As it follows from what I have observed, students visit the place mostly to communicate with each other and switch off from studying rather than to eat there. To be even more precise and less prejudiced, I have conducted an interview with one of the visitors of Latitude Fifty-Five to get to know what other people think of the place under consideration. My interviewee is a typical student of our University, a 3rd-year Bio-Chem Major. He reports he is used to visiting the place almost every day, mostly when he waits for the next class or meets with friends. One of the main things that appeals to the interviewee is that Latitude Fifty-Five offers a lot of activities to take part in, such as playing XBOX, watching TV, and playing table soccer. In addition to this, he states the place provides laptops for students to use; so that one does not have to carry their laptops with them when they need them.
