Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been Where are you going, Where Have You Been is one of the greatest story I have read. Characters are best placed to best describe the situation. Antagonism between Connie and her mother starts the story. He mother asks her, “Why dont you keep your room clean like your sister? How have you got your hair fixed—what stinks? Hairspray? You dont see your sister using that junk (Oates 1)." Her mother and her mother’s sisters paint June a ‘saint’, but this description suits her character. Although Connie seems to fight against her mother and her family, this is the only group of people she truly knows. Connie tries a split personality with hope that, she will fit both at hope and elsewhere. She does this by having a selected smile, walking style, hairstyle, and even laughter style one meant for home and the other meant for elsewhere.
The short story is from a potential victim’s view where Connie is a victim while Arnold Friend is a killer who seduces Connie and gives her promises of security (Oates 1-7). Indeed, Arnold Friend depicts a strange and mismatched appearance that represents danger (Oates 4). He also seems to conceal threat by depicting a calm voice, gentle coaxing, and convincing voice (Oates 3-7). When Arnold visits her home in her parents’ absence, he is a hard character for Connie to define, he lies somewhere between young and old, human and non-human, calm and strange. She is unable to figure him out and his intentions. The author asserts, “She couldnt decide if she liked him or if he was just a jerk, and so she dawdled in the doorway and wouldnt come down or go back inside (Oates 3).” Connie’s teenage rejects the role of daughter to her mother, sister to June, and “nice” girl to the family to cultivate her sexual persona, which flourishes only when she is away from her home and family.
The music Connie listens to draws her into the world of fantasies. It paints an ideal love world and love life, which makes her daydream about boys (Oates 5-7). The author does not make it clear however whether Connie is just day dreaming busking in the sun while listening to her music from the radio or Arnold was at her home in reality. This aspect of the story leave the reader with no clarity of Arnold and Connie escapade. Did it happen in reality or was she fantasizing?

Short Response Paper to Junot Diazs Novel

... No. Short Response Paper to Junot Diaz’s Novel Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao illustrates a story surrounding a character named Oscar who is too fat and too much of a nerd to be socially acceptable. He is a Dominican American boy who is struggling with the difficulties arising out of his social isolation, racial background and deprived social class status. Critical review of novel by Christopher Taylor published in 2008 in The Guardian asserts that Oscar Wao represents a character impersonating typical self-loathing of coloured people in the United States. Taylor makes his point by saying: Diaz succeeds in coupling the book's interest in genre to the creolisation he values in Caribbean culture. At the same time, he's...

Anthropology Short Response Paper

...In Key Concepts and their Application Ahearn s: 'We must shift our focus away from searching for definitive interpretations and instead concentrate on looking for information that constrains the type and number of meanings that might emerge from an eventIt is therefore the job of the anthropologist to identify these interpretative criteria in particular discursive events by looking for textual, temporal, sociocultural and spatial constraints on meaning.' (Ahearn: 57) Ahearn is at pains to divorce practice theorists definitions from her observations, using them as a guide rather than a mantra to understanding how the Junigau villagers themselves explain their society. Short Response # 5

03 November 2007 The Virgin Suicides The boys were amazed to hear the girls’ stories and gossip about the neighbors. “As the houses passed, they had something to say about the families in each one, which meant, they had been looking out at us as intensely as we had been looking in.” (123) Therefore, the boys discovered for the first time since the death of the first sister that the girls were quite normal. In fact they found the sisters to be just as regular as the boys themselves. In referring to the girls, the boys used the words, “Like us…” hence, the boys’ perspective of the Lisbon sisters changed in that, they saw the girls as they saw themselves - youths in the process of development with like beliefs, values and behaviors....

...What is Philosophy? It is a general understanding to people that philosophy is merely a study or an intense field of the academe. That can be easilyseen due to the nature of philosophical studies in today’s educational system. Philosophical thinking is seen as something outside the daily affairs of people and life itself. It is funny how such is thought of since philosophy is really about life and existence. Kit Fine believes that philosophy is itself a huge paradox. Philosophy seeks to find truth, but is sometimes lost in wonder on its path. More importantly, philosophy is supposed to be essential in finding the relevance and meaning to life and existence yet it is not given much attention by society today. However... is Philosophy? It is a ...

... Science as a Motor of Progress The result of the industrial revolution was an increase in the working people and so the problems associated with the stresses of working came up. Many working people experienced stresses of migration to urban centers, and the economic problems associated with it. This led to the use of scientific approaches to solve these social problems. Science in this case became the motor for progress in Europe especially since it became the basis of the studies involving psychology, criminology, mental illnesses, and other social problems. Scientists like Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein helped in the launching of modernism via the use of scientific and irrational methods that were new at that time (Hunt 753... Science...

... Russian Revolution Russian revolution that began in 1917 was inevitable because the present government that held power at that time was incompetent and unable to lead the Russian people. The people were suffering from lack of basic necessities since they did not have homes, were disease afflicted and did not have food. In addition, the nation has sustained the greatest number of causalities in the World War and it was in a very unstable condition (Hunt 791). Nicholas, the Russian leader failed to lead the people who had lost trust in him anyway. After the revolts broke out, he left power unceremoniously thus leaving Russia vulnerable. ...Showalter, Elaine. “Representing Ophelia: Women, Madness and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism”. Hamlet. Ed. Susanne Woford. Bedford ; St Martens, 1994. 220-240 The thesis intends to unravel the character of Ophelia, who has not really been a figure that enthuse the critics to the extent of other female literary characters although her presence could not be denied in different contexts whether in the paintings of Redon or the music of Bob Dylan. Short Response to event

... wider. A company can not win the prize pool, but there are potential partners in the audience, maybe. As a rule audience in such kind of events is professional orientated and someone could be interested in your project, or your company may hear an interesting question and find a partner itself. So I think taking audience into account is important, so I will in my future career. The entire event was pretty much verbal: speakers from App software companies proclaimed speeches 10 minutes long and then answered jury’s questions, audience were listening and we all were wearing tag sticks on our chest with information we had put there etc. I was involved in nonverbal communication nodding as a response on verbal communication, shaking hands...
