It is evident in the book that Janie Crawford from the episode has been depicted to be attractive and full of confidence. The middle-aged black woman who is the main character in the book engages in a mission to find the right place regardless of confusion, forces that cannot be predicted, and other threatening forces. Tea Cake who is Janie’s husband believes that he can control the environment he feels the storm is just but a simple happening. Though the storm is depicted as a force without consciousness, it causes destruction and chaos and completely confuses the universe (Davis 512). This is among the many forces antagonizing Janie, which included gossip of the porch culture, the sexism nature of Eatonville’s men and antagonizing doctrines to which Nanny, Logan, and Jody adheres to (Domestic Violence In Zora Neale Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God: A Feminist Reading 122). Davis suggests that living in the muck for quite a while taught Janie a lot about life and ability to fight all forces despite where or how you live (Davis 513). The unity depicted by people joining Tea Cake, Janie, and Motor Boat in the muck showed unity against the scary ordeal, the storm.
The relationship between Janie and Tea Cake showed in a friendly way and mutual bond they helped each other survive as in the case where a dog attacks Janie, Tea Cake rescues her and kills the dog. The fight with the raging storm and eventual winning by surviving show Janie’s need to survive by all cost despite being blown to rough water, attack by dog and rescue show her determination to achieve her quest by
