Mengjie Zhang Mills English 1A 10-4 Reading response Comprehension response The explores how advertisers used gender based adsin order to attract buyers. They explore the differences found in male and female in order to appeal to their different motivations. He asserts that although some ads targets both men and women, the ad makers explore the different stereotypes on gender. According to the writer, ads that target the male are grouped as men’s women and men’s men while those that target women are women’s men and women’s women.

He then goes further to explore the differences in advert by looking at different examples. It can be observed that ads for women and men are different depending on the characters used, the context, time aired and content. Adverts for male are mainly aired on the weekends in between soccer shows. At this time men are trying to relax and adverts fulfill this motivation by showing ads that help them escape their reality. Ads that target the male audience will usually have a super model female. Its every man fantasy to have no strings attached with a beautiful woman so they get to indulge for a few minutes.

Ads targeting male usually advertise automotives and beer. This is because men are the decision makers when it comes to buying cars and are the major consumers of beer. Ads targeting female are usually played during the weekdays since women are presumed to spend more time at home during weekdays compared to men. The content of these ads also differs from those targeting the male. They will usually deal with keeping the family intact and having a comfortable home. This is because having a happy family is what drives women.

Such ads will have almost only female characters by will also have women’s men who are represented as loving and family men. Ads targeting men show activities that are mainly done by men such as going on long road trips and fishing. Critical reading response Where has the writer used effective—or ineffective—organization, style, evidence, or argumentation? The writer has been very effective in giving evidence of his claim that advertisers use gender stereotypes in creating different ads to reach different segments based on the gender demographic.

The writer firsts states the claim and then systematically supports his argument by exploring four different adverts. His organization is on point as anyone can follow the text easily. It is interesting how the writer connects the ads content to the motivation of different genders. For instance, the value of women is measured by their appearance. Ads targeting this group thus will advertise body products, clothes and shoes. Essay connection response: Are men and women intrinsically different?

The writer explores how ads uses the stereotype that men and women are different to attract customers. This raises the question whether men and women are actually different. There is no doubt that men and women are different not only in their physical appearances. Men and women view the same things differently. This is why both genders have continually confessed that they cannot understand the opposite gender. The fact that men and women think differently does not however mean that they should be two opposing sides.

They can use their difference to complement each other. From the text, using gender based ads is thus an effective way of attracting the target market as both men and women have different predisposition.
