English 15th October Seminar paper: The Mall of America Everyone goes into a shopping mall with an intention at the back of their mind. Some people go there to see what other people are doing, some go there because they are idle and have nothing to do at home, some also go there to see the new products that they think they can buy when they get money at some point in life, the list of every person’s desire when in a shopping mall is endless. In this essay people are seen coming into the building to do all sorts of things like refreshment, “two pubescent girls in retainers and braces sat beside me sipping coffees topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles” (page 107 pr 4 ) Some people are addicted to going into the mall even if they are going to do nothing, they just go and sit there watching what other people are doing and gets back home when evening comes, the trend continues everyday as Gutterson is telling us “the security cops got me figured and keep their distance, I don’t get hassled for hanging around , not shopping.
” (Page 110 par 4)The mall is valued by many people and sometimes referred to as “ mecca”, its its even seen as heaven by the people, the mall is referred to as a place of special significance to the adherent of the belief system of the people of America “pilgrim” Americans see the malls as a form of identity, people must go to the malls just for them to be like the others in the community. But they don’t know is that they are losing an opportunity to build a sense of community, the traditional market where people used to meet and exchange goods and services is slowly disappearing.
