Had the organization hired the applicant for compensation that was below industry standards, it would be opening itself up to possible labor issues in the future. Giving compensation that matches the industry standard would be proper business practice. Moreover, as can be inferred from the passage, the final payment was still 30% below the client’s budget so it was still in the client’s best interest.

If I were the project manager, I would have done the same thing. Although I may be acting as a liaison for the company, it is in my opinion that since the company gave me a budget to work with, they trust me to negotiate in order to get the best people for their organization. In doing what I did, I also kept the organization protected from possible compensation issues with this applicant. In addition, I gave the company a possible employee who will give her loyalty to the people who were willing to give her compensation that is more than what she had initially asked for.
