They were based on assumptions that I did not recognize, and in a discussion, I start to realize those assumptions were taking place.

In an ideal course, the format would revolve around having the professor give a short introduction to the topic so that I have a framing of how to think about things and give some structure to the following discussion. Then the class would consume some kind of media, be it an article or a book or a movie or something like that, and would debate different aspects of that issue in a fairly unstructured way.

This would not always be the best format for a class that involved giving lots of information, but I think that for most classes this would help me develop my skills more fully and ensure that I question some of my underlying assumptions when discussing topics that I might not have fully thought through before.
