SUMMARIZING DIALOGUE Question Find two examples of dialogues…one that is dramatized and other that is summarized. Example of a Dramatized Dialogue:Watching in mirror, recalling the past saddening memories wet eyes. With a hair brush in hand, she started to comb, thin ashen curls; also noticed a lot more lines on face. While standing beside the window seeing through it a voice in head said, “Age has set in”.Example of a Summarized Dialogue:Jane was so excited for the up coming fun with her fellows but all her happiness spoiled when she asked Russell about attending the birthday party of Mr.

John’s daughter; he told her that he would rather not go there as he was not feeling well to attend any kind of gathering. She had to attend it alone.Question 2:Write a couple of sentences speculating about why Shah decided to dramatize one and summarize the other bit of dialogue.Answer:The possible reasons for dramatizing one part and summarizing the next one for Shah might have been to create a strong emotional feeling or sense of attachment and curiosity for the reader in the first part and then in the very next part summarizing the dialogue to neutralize the stirred feelings immediately by not quoting the dialogue directly but creating a distance between reader and happening by indirectly communicating.

Question 3:Add a sentence or two assessing Shah’s choice. What would be the effect if the dramatized example was summarized and summarized example was dramatized?Answer:I strongly appreciate Shah’s choice as she has been smartly successful in keeping the reader engaged in the whole dialogue. It also helped in moving the story forward; a good dialogue helps the story to move forward (Kempton, 2004). If this order were reversed it would not create as effective result as it created in this order.

Shah very wisely created feelings for reader first by dramatizing the dialogue and then readily neutralizing the whole scene by switching to another mood.References: Kempton, Gloria. Write Great Fiction: Dialogue : Techniques and Exercises for Crafting Effective Dialogue. Cincinnati, Ohio: Writers Digest Books, 2004. Print. P-64
