Life of Pi Reflection People cope differently with different traumatic experiences, often choosing to escape reality and hide behind the facade of fantasy. Pi’s traumatic experience begins when the ship he and his family were sailing in to Canada sank (Martel 97). Through the 14 year old boy, Martel shows how humans use stories to express their inherent feelings on the actions of those around them. People are essentially storytellers who cast their experiences and life occurrences in the form of stories.

Pi was unable to process the traumatic stream of events that occurred after their ship sank thereby choosing to relay the events through a seemingly plausible version. Pi escapes the reality that while, on the shipwreck, the ship’s cook killed and cut the sailor and Pi’s mother and used them as bait and food. Obviously, these events are quite traumatic to the boy who opts to use animals to express what he witnessed on the lifeboat. Within the society, people encounter different problems in their environment and lives, and certain people opt to ignore these problems or face them.

Today, the act of escapism is widespread as it is normal for people to evade things that trouble theme choosing to focus on pleasant events. In addition, people sometimes take part in detrimental actions to escape the negative events in their lives. Famous people and celebrities routinely encounter public scrutiny as tabloids and paparazzi seek to capture celebrities’ every move. This constant scrutiny takes an intense toll on these persons, thus choosing to escape the reality of the limelight through behaviors such as drug abuse and other undesirable actions.

We constantly see celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Charlie Sheen and Paris Hilton among others falling to the ground drunk, being apprehended and arraigned for driving while drunk. Drug abuse became a coping mechanism for these individuals to deal with constant public attention in their private lives. Work cited Martel, Y. Life of Pi. New York: Mariner Books, 2003. Print.
