Raymond Carvers "The Cathedral," and Anton Chekhovs "Lady with the Pet Dog," Thesis; Despite overwhelming exploration of themes of particular piecesof literary work, there remain new concepts worth exploration and analysis. The “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver and “Lady with the Pet Dog" are some of the most widely read and analyzed pieces of literature. However, a new dimension seeking to discover interpretation of the stories in the modern context can be engaged.Summary of “The Cathedral”The short story talks about a couple who had an interesting encounter with a blind man who was an intimate friend to the narrator’s wife.
Most of the story talks about how the narrator despised the blind man. The story ends up dramatically with the blind man assisting the narrator to draw the cathedral.Summary of “Lady with the Pet Dog" This short story talks about two friends who meet accidentally and develop a profound friendship. Although the two friends are married, they find themselves in love and therefore become unfaithful to their partners. However, they still want to hold on to their respective families although they are not happy with the family.
Analysis of Themes in the modern contextWhereas the first story can tell us about modernism and realities of modern society, the second story, “Lady with the Pet Dog," can tell us how modernity has affected family relationships. Interpretation of the themes in contemporary societyAlthough the two stories have different thematic characteristics, they fit so well in the modern lifestyles. Despite being written many years ago, they are still applicable to date. Conclusion The two stories can be analyzed in a new dimension and therefore, give us an insight of the modern problems affecting our society.
