Gordon Adams, Organ Selling, and E Pluribus Unum This portfolio contains three different projects and I hope that on reading this essay, a clear understanding of my projects will come through. The three projects contained in this portfolio relate to my introductory class (Writing.102), which includes a summary of Gordon Adams essay, organ selling, and the summary of E Pluribus Unum. My choice of the three works is because of significant reasons, which include the need to address relevant issues. Indeed, the three projects were timely and addressed my intended audience, which include my fellow students and my course instructors. Furthermore, the topics addressed in the three works appease me. This essay presents a portfolio of my three projects, which addresses them in relation to subject matter knowledge, writing process knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, genre knowledge, discourse community knowledge, and meta-cognition. Ultimately, the essay will draw a detailed conclusion on semester growth and impact on other discourse communities as a writer and as a responder. In writing the project, summary of Gordon Adams essay, I sought to address a specific audience, which includes students from Arizona State University, the management of Arizona State University, career experts, academic professionals, and future law students. Ideally, the purpose of this project was to present the views and academic journey of the future law student as well as my opinion on his views. Furthermore, the constraints related to this project relate to lack of reference literature, possibility of biased information, cultural influence, and use of second person narration. The stance of this project depicts the mental or emotional position adopted with respect to Gordon Adams’ letter. The stance is that of hostility against the University’s Mathematics Requirement Arizona and that Arizona State University should grant Adams his request because he would not require algebra knowledge in his legal profession. The ethos of this project relate to the fact that Gordon Adams was an adult, a Justice Studies student of the university student, and a member of the Pawnee Tribe of Oklahoma who seeks to become a lawyer and representative of his tribe. The pathos of the project relates to the fact that he was the first person in his tribe to enter college, had a good academic record, and focused on his career path. The logos of the project relate to the idea that the legal profession does not require algebra knowledge. This project depicts metacognition where Adams uses higher thinking to realize that a waiver of the university’s mathematics requirements would help him realize his career objectives. Moreover, the genres used in this project include narrative writing, descriptive writing, and persuasive writing where I use logical appeals and emotions to win the audience’ support on my viewpoint. Notably, my project refers to the mathematics discourse community s seen in the specialized terminologies as algebra used in the project. In writing the project, I sought to address a specific audience, which includes kidney patients in America and their families, medical professionals, and my fellow students. Ideally, the purpose of this project was to present the views of the two authors, analyze their power of conviction, and present my opinion with regard to organ selling as a solution to kidney problems in America. The constraints in this project relate to possibility of unsound and unhealthy decisions, lack of medical knowledge, and the presence of both positive and negative statements. The stance of this project depicts the legal, medical, and emotional position adopted with respect to organ selling. Joanna MacKay’s stance is in support of organ selling while David Holcberg’s stance is in support of human capacity to reason and make the right decisions. Most assuredly, my stance is that legalization of organ selling can help many people but building healthy lives would be more efficient in helping kidney patients. The ethos of this project relates to the idea that legalization of organ selling and willful selling of kidneys would solve the kidney problems in America. The pathos of the project relates to the idea that a parent can sell their kidney to pay the medical fees of their child as an act of parental love. Moreover, the logos relate to the idea that human beings have the ability to reason and have a right to reason and make the right decisions in support of organ selling. Notably, the project depicts metacognition where the two authors address the dynamics of legalizing organ selling with relation to address kidney problems in America. Furthermore, the project refers to the medical discourse community as seen in the specialized terminologies as kidney transplant and living donor used in the project. The project uses genres, which include persuasive writing and descriptive writing where I use descriptive sentences to detail and compare the views of both authors to arrive at an informed opinion. In writing the project, summary of E Pluribus Unum, I sought to address a specific audience, which includes fellow students, Americans, course instructor, and democrats across the world. Most assuredly, the purpose of this project was to present the views of Paul Krugman on the uniqueness of American democracy and my position on the level of democracy in America nevertheless, this project is prone to various limitations, which include possibility of biased opinion from Paul Krugman, limited reference literature, and the broadness of this topic. Additionally, the stance of this project depicts the mental emotional position adopted with respect to American democracy. The stance is that of supporting the uniqueness of American democracy and the idea that American democracy is universal and the best in the world. The project manifests the use of ethos, which relate to the idea that Krugman’s article compared the United States of 1779 with the United States of 2013 and establishes a unique American character that persists to this date. The pathos in this project relate to the ability of America to accommodate new people and new ideas with the ideals of democracy, freedom, and unity in an ethical manner to the unique American society. The logos relate to the fact that America is the only country that declared its independence, has the oldest government, and abhors equality among all citizens. Furthermore, the project uses genres that include descriptive writing and persuasive writing where I use logical appeals and emotions to win the audience’ support on my viewpoint. This project depicts metacognition where Paul Krugman uses higher reasoning to establish the uniqueness of American democracy and where I establish the hypocrites and pretenders of American democratic ideals. Notably, this project refers to the democracy discourse community as seen in the specialized terminologies as E Pluribus Unum used in the project. In conclusion, I find that I recorded immense growth in writing throughout the semester. Indeed, I have developed substantial knowledge on writing genres, metacognition, rhetoric situation, discourse community, and writing processes. Moreover, my semester growth in writing may influence other discourse communities as I have some basic knowledge on the terminologies used in different discourse communities presented in this portfolio.
