Bilingualism activists argue that in teaching students in the country, teachers must use only the English language as the medium of instruction. Opponents on this argument stated that students must be taught through the use of their native languages before teaching and exposing them to mainstream English classes for in this way they can learn better, which is the primary benefit of bilingualism. Activists stated that to avoid confusions in the minds of these immigrant children and to help them to adjust in the norms and standards of the new society they are in, they must learn to adopt the English language (B. Mujica 152). Thereby, allowing non-native English speaking students to learn English effectively as they grow older. Nevertheless, opponents of the English Only movement, headed by James Fallows, strongly argued that teaching non-English speaking students with their native language or using bilingual education will help them in learning and understanding better their lessons, allowing to them acquire outstanding academic performance in school.
