Another thing that I did in preparation to this courswork was to listen to several movies and songs with different accents and dialects so as to improve my understanding of phonetics and phonology. (2) i. Into The Flames’. Chapter 1 of: Sheehy, Gail. 1999. Hillary’s Choice. Random House, New York. (a) I choose the part where Bill Clinton fell in love with a divorced woman in Arkansas in the late 1980’s leading to Hillary contemplating divorcing him. In this part, the linguistic formulation gives rise to the effect of portraying Hillary as a strong woman. The syntax in this part of the book is that the words and the sentences are arranged to first of all show that Hillary was not to blame for her husband falling in love with the other woman and hence makes it a sad ordeal for her and then brings the element of decision making and perseverance and hence portraying her as a very strong woman who is able to handle difficult situations and come out victorious. (b) This writing is a bibliography. It talks about the life of Hillary Clinton. One linguistic feature of the text which is associated with this kind of writing is writing in retrospect as it is an account of past events. (c) One inference I have made from reading the text is that women are very strong emotionally. (d) The evidence in the text which support my inference is the fact that Hillary, a woman, was able to stand the emotional stress of her husband falling in love with another woman who was the Arkansas divorcee and also allegedly cheating on her with Monica a state house intern. (e) Aspects of the language used in this text have led me to make this inference as they have portrayed Hillary as having been subjected to a lot of emotional torture as a woman. She played her role as a wife perfectly but somehow all did not go well for her. The language used in this text makes one feel pity and compassion for Hillary. The fact that she comes over all the challenges that faced her indeed portrays her as very strong and as a typical woman, hence leading to my inference that women are very strong. (f) In order to make it less likely to make this inference, a relevant passage in the text would be one which describes Hillary as a special woman who is extremely different from all other woman and thus making it clear that all her actions and decisions are unique to her alone and no other woman on earth. (3) (ii) WRITING AND ANALYSIS: a) Produce a piece of writing of up to 1000 words which represents ONE of the following: a newspaper article commenting on a recent news story (you can decide what the story is and choose a real or invented one) Should the UK have invited President Kenyatta? The UK government plaid host to the newly elected President of the republic of Kenya His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Mwigai Kenyatta. This comes barely two months after his election which faced a lot of challenge especially by the European Union Nations. President Kenyatta and His Deputy President Hon. William Ruto are facing charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This had caused a lot of criticism even during their campaigns which challenged their right to take part in a presidential election as candidates and yet they were under investigation by the ICC. Most nations came out clearly to state that they did not support the candidature of the two ICC inductees and that Kenya ought not to vote for them. The UK government was outspoken about the matter and they vowed to distance themselves from the two ICC suspects in the event that they get to be elected. The Kenyan British high commissioner on behalf of his government read a public statement outlining clearly that Kenya shall face sanctions I case the two ICC suspects find their way to the helm of the government. After the election of the two ICC suspects into office, they have not even served for a hundred days and yet the Kenyan President has already been invited into the UK where he was met and hosted as a state visitor. This is a matter which has led to a lot of public out roar in the UK and in other parts of the world as well. The President is suspected for breaching the codes of conduct in accordance to the human rights and hence threated humanity as a whole. Giving such a person a cordial welcome is not only an abuse of human rights but also a slap on the face of the UK citizens who were sure that their government would live up to its pledge of keeping off from the suspects of the ICC in the event that they find their way to office. The Kenyan President is expected spend close to a week in the UK as a visitor of the state which comes with its implications both directly and indirectly on the UK tax payers. It is a matter which has led to protests by the Human Rights Watch group. President Kenyatta is in the UK attending a conference in London at the historic Lancaster House. The conference is intended to discuss the way forward in ending the lawlessness which has marred Somalia for decades now. The country has not had a stable central government for well over twenty years. It has had a fair share of war and bloodshed which has led to economic recess of the country. The lawlessness in Somalia has not only infringed on the human rights and development of the people of Somalia alone but that of its neighboring countries and the world at large. The people of Somalia have faced mass killings and injuries which has led to them fleeing their country to seek refuge in the neighboring countries. This has put a lot of pressure in the neighboring countries and has led to them seeking for the indulgence of the international community. It has made the neighboring countries spend a lot of their resources in dealing with the logistics of playing host to the ever increasing refugees over the extended period of time and in turn led to a reduction of their economic development. Terrorist gangs like the Al-Qaeda have been said to take advantage of the lawlessness in Somalia to extend their ties and ill motives against their enemies. They use the country as a hub for preparing their attacks on their enemies and in turn develop into a very strong and fortified network which is difficult to deal with. The lawlessness in Somalia make it difficult to work out a mechanism that can stop the spread of the terrorist networks in the world as the terrorists are able to maneuver around the country without notice. It is said that terrorist gangs have taken advantage of the poverty that has been created in Somalia by the lawlessness in the land to extend its network. He citizens of Somalia have not had peace for ages and this has retarded economic activities like farming, fishing, industrialization and commerce in general. It is common in the Somalia capital for a bomb to blast in a market place and the citizens to gather moments later and continue trading. This has led to lack of local and foreign investment and to advent poverty in the country. Taking advantage of this, terrorist gangs offer huge sums of money to the Somali people so as to indict them into the gang and use them as the pawns in conducting their terrorism attacks. Some of the citizens are even used as suicide bombers in the attacks all thanks to the poverty in the country. Kenya shares the longest stretch of boundary with Somalia and is with no doubt the biggest bearer of the effects of the mayhem in the country. The largest number of the refugees from Somalia seek refuge in Kenya. They have settled in Kenya for ages with some of them gaining citizenship of the country through naturalization. Others have even started families in Kenya leading to the birth of new Kenyan citizens of Somalia origin. Some have intermarried with the Kenyan citizens and hence making the Somalia problem a Kenyan problem. Some habitats in Kenya of Somalia origin are prominent land owners and businessmen. The problem of Somalia is so much entrenched in Kenya so much so that at some point Kenya actually sent its troops to Somalia to try and instill some law and order in the country which had been almost entirely taken over by the Al-Shabaab linked with the Al-Qaeda terrorist group. In this regard, President Kenyatta deserves and rightly got the invitation to the UK. (3) (b) (i) One linguistic feature which is typical of this writing is pragmatics. In this article, context has been greatly used to bring out the intended meaning in most of the instances and hence making pragmatics a typical linguistic feature in the article. Another linguistic feature which is typical in this article is semantics. The real meaning of most of the words in this article has been a key factor in bringing out the message intended. (ii) In writing this peace, I have tried to achieve the issue of acknowledging the concerns of both the people who are for and against the matter being debated i.e the welcoming of an ICC suspect into the UK. In writing this article, I have also tried to achieve creating a convincing argument for the readers who do not agree with the welcoming of an ICC suspect to the UK. (iii) My audience are basically everyone who are able to read or to comprehend English upon being read to because the subject matter in the article is humanity and human rights which cuts across the board for all mankind. (iv) TWO linguistic decisions that I made were on the use of syntax where I decided to arrange words and sentences appropriately and on the use of semantics where I decided to use words with clear meanings. (v)One linguistic decision that I made was in regard to syntax. I decided to arrange my sentences such that they lead the reader to getting convinced about the matter under debate. The arrangement of the sentences and wording is such that it acknowledges all concerns of the involved parties and then brings out a logical explanation that leads to the conclusion. Another linguistic decision that I made is in regard to semantics where simple and comprehensible words have been used as opposed to using technical terms which might create confusion in message delivery. (vi) In this piece of writing, I have achieved to make all the interested parties in the subject under debate to feel that their views are valid and are sensible. I have also achieved to convince all the interested parties to get to understand and to agree with my conclusion in regard to the matter under debate.
