This consequently resulted in the slumping of the sales of Sony corporation console Play Station 2. Sony, as a result, had to counter this move by the Microsoft Corporation by introducing the Play Station 3 console to challenge the XBOX 360 console. Ever since the introduction of the Play Station 3 console in the market, gamers have continually argued about the superiority of the gaming console of their choice. There is no doubt that both consoles are excellent in terms of performance hence determination of the superior console is not a mere task.
The only option left is to analyze these consoles from a technical perspective to give an element of closure to the gamers worldwide on which gaming console is superiorn(Dijs and Hegarty 36). The heart of these gaming consoles is the processor. The faster a processor is the faster a console is in terms of executing commands and processing games with intense graphic content. The processors in the Play Station 3 and the XBOX360 consoles are very different and unique in terms of the architectures used to build their processors.
Hence making distinct and clear-cut comparisons can pose a challenge. The XBOX 360 contains two processor chips that run concurrently, whereas the Play Station 3 contains seven individual processor cores. . The graphics cards present within the consoles of the XBOX 360 and the Play Station 3 make it possible to play games with high graphic content. Games with many graphics provide a better and vivid gaming experience; hence, there is the need to invest in graphics when building a gaming console.
The Play Station 3 and the XBOX 360 contain custom made and designed graphics cards. The XBOX 360 console incorporates a Xenos graphics card. This Xenos graphics card has video RAM compared to the Play Station 3’s video RAM although this RAM remains shared with the system’s RAM. In contrast, the Play Station 3 has 256MB of video RAM. This RAM is set aside to handle graphics specifically. In addition to the 256MB of the dedicated video RAM, the graphics card is able to share up to 224MB of the system’s RAM.
Putting bandwidth into consideration, Play Station 3 has an edge over the XBOX 360 but the XBOX 360 console has the advantage of having 10MB of eDRAM. In terms of GPU, the Play Station 3 shows better results but the peak performance of the XBOX 360’s eDRAM wins it for the Microsoft’s console in terms of graphics (Dijs and Hegarty 56). To provide a better gaming experience, the processing power of consoles has to be enhanced. Processing power goes hand in hand with the available RAM (Random Access Memory).
Very high processing power is useless without RAM. The greater the RAM capacity of the console, the more efficient the console is in terms of game play. The RAM contained in the Play Station 3 console is the XDR RAM whereas the XBOX 360 console incorporates the GDDR3 RAM. The X DRAM is much faster than at a speed of 3.2 Gigahertz whereas the GDDR3 RAM runs at only 700Megahertz. The Play Station 3
