As a child, I would often mix substances and would watch in fascination as each substance became more active when mixed with another. In Yaounde, I would make a facial cleanser out of a juicy plant known as A. barbadensis Mill. I, therefore, sought to pursue a career that would accommodate and even enhance my talent. My passion of becoming a pharmacist grew stronger as I grew up. However, when my grandmother died as a result of being injected with an overdose of meperidine by a drug store owner, I definitely knew I had to become a pharmacist.
The drug store owner claimed that he was licensed to administer the medication. Following the injection, my grandmother slipped into a coma and later died. I was totally convinced that I had to become a pharmacist, so as to save other people from having to go through such an ordeal. For me, becoming a pharmacy technician was the first step towards becoming a pharmacist. Initially, I was studying at Howard Community College but transferred to Washington Adventist University to study biotechnology.
Among other courses, I have completed chemistry, biology, and mathematics. By studying biology, I have learnt the functioning of the human system, by studying human structures such as genes and cells. Through chemistry, I have gained more insight into the reaction of chemicals and the application of such reactions to the field of pharmacy. The knowledge is instrumental in helping me understand why different people have different reactions to substances. This knowledge has fueled my passion to study pharmacy and attain a degree.
Although my performance during the first years in college was wanting due to combining work with school, I have gradually improved my grades in the last two years. This improvement is really encouraging; since it shows that I have learnt from my mistakes and taken a new approach towards studying. I am fully aware of how demanding pharmacy can be, but I am willing to study very hard, particularly now that my family and the Cameroonian government are catering for my expenses. I have, therefore, devoted myself entirely to my studies.
I have always been passionate about assisting distressed people. Accordingly, I have volunteered to tutor disadvantaged children supported by a charity organization. Similarly, I have organized fundraisers for an organization that provides housing to the poor in Africa. After attaining my pharmacy technician training and subsequent certification, I worked in hospital and a community pharmacy, in order to gain experience on the reality of the job. As a pharmacy technician, I was in charge of proper storage of medication, patient profiling, counting medication, refilling orders, and receiving written prescriptions.
Through my working experience, I have realized that I have the potential to become a great pharmacist. I believe that my working experience and relevant studies make me a very viable candidate for a career in pharmacy. In future, I aim to partner with a charitable organization and open a pharmacy school in Africa. The school will have a curriculum for teaching community pharmacy care, thus easing the deficiency of pharmacists who are licensed. In addition, I aspire to open pharmacies in underdeveloped countries, as well as in the United States.
Although I dream of impacting lives through pharmacy, I am aware that my dreams will not materialize immediately. Nonetheless, I am willing to dedicate my time to studying and
