Queer Theory Introduction Queer originally refers to uncommon practices that were conducted by the unreserved people. It was also associated with terms that were commonly used as slang for weird behaviors like homosexual abuse. In recent times, it is employed as a collection of marginal, cultural, sexual and personal identifications of sexes, thus, the theoretical model of lesbian and gay studies. Queer is nowadays associated with lesbian and gay persons, with aspects of cross-dressing ambiguity and corrective surgery affiliated to gender change. Developments of queer theory Queer theory was first identified in 1991 where stable sexes and genders developed part of a gay and lesbian reworking of identity as a group of numerous positions. After a span of three years, it dominated the markets as an accent mark term that progressed itself in vernacular perspective. It is believed that queer stipulates hermeneutics of politics emphasizing representation. It is, however, unknown if persons of different sexual inclinations had similar political objectives and whether the sexual minority felt they could be represented alongside others of different sexualities and inclinations. Theorists suggest that corrective measures to be adopted in parliaments were formulated by the homosexuals so as to campaign for their rights in the society. The aim of this was to collect recommendations so as to achieve common interests by marshalling minority rights (Lauretis 2007). The queer association is mainly concerned with the promotion of identity policies as far as dialogues, practices, identities and sites being recognized as queer. It is, therefore, coined around self identification, public and common identity whereas, to some extent, it has led to the false sense of their identity and legitimization of the same. The identity categories branded gays and lesbians to be recognized by their sense of dressings and associations. Gay movement and liberation This movement mainly advocated for the public revelation of gays and lesbians should be candid about their sexuality to peers, friends and colleagues as a way of countering their pride. The first countrywide gay rights organization was established in late 1950s and was known as the Mattachine civilization. This group, however, did not do much activism. The gay term was previously used to refer to homosexuals, and some people saw it as a rejection of the identity of homosexuals. Direct actions and consciousness on the identity of homosexuals were emphasized to facilitate the realization of the movement’s effectiveness. As late as 1970s, the movement, however, became unpopular with the emergence of the official movement of civil society. Arguments for gay marriages Suggestions by the majority of gay marriage supporters are that, just like other people, homosexuals too require equal treatment. They base their arguments upon the claim that it is wrong to discriminate against them because it is unjustified to do so, and it is against the laws of humanity. There is a misunderstanding on what exactly entails homosexuality, in that the assumptions that gay people enjoy similar civil rights protection as heterosexuals. Another faction still does not realize if truly gay marriages subsist and what it entails. The assumptions behind these misunderstandings have it that gays are womanizers who are unable to form permanent, dedicated and binding relationships. The value exhibited by the gay men largely similar to those of the straight men, thus, it is hard to distinguish the two. These values range from loyalty for single partners to devotion in the relationship. It is also observed that they abide by the laws, maintain excellent neighbor relations, and ensure that their surrounding communities are safe to live in, by offering valuable assistance to the society through different community projects. Theorists suggest that the benefit of gay marriages in society is the point where partners are committed to this relationship which, in turn, slows down the spread of diseases that are sexually transmitted. It is assumed that gays have a choice when picking a partner. This is influenced by the notion that they usually desire to be heterosexual each time they feel like, but on the contrary, only a few normally have that choice. In addition, majorities believe homosexuality as nothing but sex oriented which, they claim, is multidimensional in reality (Sedgwick 1997). Homosexuality is based on principles of love and mutual liking, which is more inclined to affection and devotion than just about sex. Being gay constitutes a person’s inner identity and comes from the heart and displays its hold externally (Sedgwick 1997). Lesbianism This term refers to feminine sexual desires. Historically, lesbianism is not as common as gay marriages and has over the years been considered harmless and not similar to the heterosexual ones. It is, thus, hard to define who the lesbian is in the society because their relationships are developed and determined by the networks of socialization and networking. The political reasons for lesbians are based on three pillars of behavior or desire and identity of the sexuality. Those who adopt these identities are united by prejudice and rejection faced from family and friends consequently making it different from those of heterosexual inclination. Arguments for lesbian marriages The failure to grant this group freedom of association leads to sexual discrimination. This argument is advanced by sections of theorists and advocates who state that discrimination arises when the law prohibits them from doing what they like or interact with those they love. It also helps to heal the wounds of those who faced rape at a tender age, because they are afraid of making love with the men. This is a permanent trauma in women, especially if it were performed by a person close to the victim. Women become lesbians because they feel secured and protected with their fellow females than with the male equivalent (Berlant 2008). Arguments against same sex marriages Traditionally and spiritually, marriage is upheld as an institution between male and female union and not people of the same sex. The doctrines of the different versions of Holy Scriptures like the Bible and the Quran; it is written and believed man and woman were created to stay together for marriage reasons (Berlant 2008). The basis of marriage is for procreation unless caused by natural in capabilities like infertility. People of the same sex cannot procreate biologically. The society needs to maintain the generational patterns and changes to enhance its existence. If homosexual marriages are legalized, they will promote the practice in schools and lead to the recruitment of the innocent people to this sexual orientation. The morals and ideals of the society do not consider children to be raised in same sex environment. The children will lack the paternal love that is significant in their social developments. Raising children in same sex environments will result in children not understanding their true value in the society. The immorality of gay marriages destroys the sacred marriage institution of the church because these marriages cannot be formalized in churches. Marriages are meant to ensure continuity of species. Homosexual marriage denies reproduction of an offspring as gays and lesbians are unable to procreate and raise children. Human beings should be able to have their own children to maintain the ecological balance in the environment. This marriage will encourage incest marriages, where family members marry each other and brothers sleeping with their male counterparts from the same family (Berlant 2008). It is unnatural to engage in homosexuality because the biological organs will not interact to produce the intended results that satisfy the two parties. The thought of gay sex is repulsive and unhealthy to the organs of the parties. Same sex marriage would make evangelism complex. Evangelism should not be rendered unholy by social policies that are made to favor the minority. Changes in marriage laws, which directly do not impact heterosexual partners, should not destroy evangelism since previous generations maintained the same. Conclusions The queer theory is useful in everybody’s life because it spells out the morality of sexuality in men and women. It is used to explain the usefulness of one’s sexuality since there is no appropriate definition of queer. The critics argue that queer theory assumes and ignores the social and institutional situations, which the lesbians and gays experience. Thus, it should not be a basis for discussing identity including those race and class, but should focus on discussions. Gays and lesbians should not be allowed in the community because it is immoral, unholy, derails institution of marriage and dismantles procreation impeding generational change.
