Task Sequel to Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw Introduction Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw is a play considered as a romantic humor. George is a professional Irish writer who was exceptional in composing and writing captivating plays. The story presents the social and economic life of the British, by accounting on the women’s liberty, exposed as a romantic comedy. Pygmalion has major characters that George uses to build the plot of the story and they include; Henry Higgins, Eliza Doolittle, Colonel Pickering, Mrs. Higgins and Alfred Doolittle. The minor characters in the play are Clara, Freddy, Mrs. Eynsford Hill, Mrs. Pearce and Nepomuuck. Plot of the Play The play commence when Mrs. Eynsford Hill with her daughter, Clara, wait for her son, Freddy to hail a taxi raining weather. Freddy notices the flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, selling a flower that had fallen down and paid for by a mother and a son to a man (Shaw, 8). Henry Higgins, a phonetician was taking notes in a phonetic script on the conversation Eliza had. The gentleman Eliza had propositioned names himself as Colonel Pickering to Higgins. The note taker gives Eliza a handful of coins and later part together for a dinner. Eliza visits Higgins and Pickering in a laboratory the subsequent morning. She surprises the two phoneticians by asking for an English lesson (Shaw, 59). Pickering challenges Higgins that he cannot convert Eliza into a compelling duchess in 6 months. Later, Eliza sits for her first public test that occurs at Higgins mother’s dwelling (Shaw, 59). Higgins finds out that Eliza still required serious training when she narrated an off-color tale about her relatives to the visitors. After six months, Higgins and Pickering take Eliza to an Embassy ball. Eliza’s exceptional speech and the beauty she presents make the Ambassador’s wife blissful. Eliza then gets insulted when Higgins comments how difficult it was for coaching Eliza. She leaves after packing her things and meets with Freddy in the street, where they embrace each other impulsively (Shaw, 59). Alfred Doolittle, Eliza’s father turns up at Mrs. Higgins house to announce his new life and responsibilities he has. Eliza who had arrived early resolves with Higgins and accompanies Mr. Doolittle to his wedding. Later Eliza launches a florist shop after a colorful wedding. Pickering becomes the financial assistance of the florist shop. Sequel to Pygmalion The main theme seen in the sequence to Pygmalion is romance that takes the core part when evaluating the play. In his play, Shaw shows how it is common for stronger individuals to look for weak partners for a hand in marriage (Shaw, 92). He explains the boredom that exists amid two similar partners having the same characteristics and ability living together. Shaw ends by giving a synopsis of the beginning of Freddy and Eliza lives together and concluding that Freddy was more attractive than Higgins. This is an aspect that influences Eliza to love Freddy more than Higgins. At the beginning of their matrimony life, Shaw manages to depict the financial difficulty that Eliza and Freddy faced. Mr. Doolittle fails to support her child even though he was mingling with the rich in the society. The challenges the Freddy and Eliza faced was economic, but not romantic. Freddy was not financially stable, since her only mother could not manage to educate his children to a higher level of education. Solution They manage to hold a glamorous wedding sponsored by Pickering as a gift to them. Eliza decides to teach phonetics to manage their lives with Freddy. The decision was put off by Higgins because of his reasons (Shaw, 92). There is another option in which they decide to initiate a flower shop, an idea that came from their close friend, Pickering. Freddy consults with his mother on the idea of starting a flower shop, but fails to get assistance. Providentially, Pickering assists the two couples financially to start up business. In examining the issue, they were faced with many intricacies at the beginning of running the business, but managed to run it profitably after gaining experience and lessons. Freddy and Eliza were now able to move to a new house and start up a family, though Eliza still associated and interact with Higgins. She could sometimes fantasize Higgins making love to her. In examining the issue, this trend could one day happen if she continued with her fantasy. Individuals who have read Pygmalion assume that Eliza became the superwoman of a romance in the play, and would be perfect in wedding the hero of it. Eliza was proclaiming a well thought-out decision when she refused a hand in marriage with Higgins, since she was led by her intuition and assumptions. Higgins mother played a role for his son’s bachelordom since the young women had enticing rivalry with his mother. The question that readers ask themselves is ‘Who was the person Eliza married at the end?’ The fact is that if Eliza would marry Higgins, a predestinate old bachelor, then she would probably be the predestinate old maid. She explicitly confessed the love Mr. Frederick Eynsford Hill had for her through love letters. Looking into the matter, Higgins was much older than Freddie who was just twenty years of age. The qualities that made him beat Higgins are that he was a gentleman. He looked elegant by wearing fitting clothes, Colonel treated and ranked him in the same level, and the exceptional love he had for Eliza. In examining the issue, the qualities made Eliza have an interest in him; hence ended up marrying him. She was an enlightened woman who did not entertain the ‘foolish romantic’ tradition that was characterized by beatings. It is common that people look for partners who are either stringer or weaker than them and do not show any preference those in the same level to manage themselves. The economic challenges were solved by Pickering, a close friend to Eliza. Although Eliza’s father was now popular and mingled with the rich, he failed to assist her daughter in trying times (Shaw, 92). Conclusion The sequel of Shaw’s play is majorly concentrated to romance as the main theme. Eliza, a key character, tries to find a suitable partner that fulfills her dreams. Freddy manages to win her heart, and they get married. Many questions individuals ask themselves is why did Eliza choose Freddy to Higgins. The question is solved when Eliza looks at various factors in choosing a companion. She likes Freddy’s smartness and submissiveness to her, which Higgins lacked.
