The idea of Building Information Modelling has existed since the 1970s. However, the first theoretical paper describing this concept was in 1992 whereby analysts put pen to paper on how to apply the concept of BIM in modern-day construction. In addition, it is also imperative to consider that the usage of BIM was not as popular during that timeline as it is nowadays (Wing, 2011, pg. 84). Much popularity over the usage of BIM came about in 2002 when Autodesk released a white paper entitled “Building Information Modelling”.

This paper assisted in the standardization, as well as the popularization of BIM as a common term for the digital representation of a “Virtual Building” for the building construction process.BIM brings about a revolutionary change in how to construct a building. As such, the Building Services System design incorporates BIM in its manual, further operation, as well as plans for management and maintenance for the building. Autodesk explores BIM as a process of including the new evolution and management of physical properties, as well as functional characteristics of the digital representation.

Building Information Modelling is a project that includes a combination of architectural, building services and structural issues. In addition, it's a model based on the process which offers insight for constructing and managing building and infrastructure projects faster. It is more economical than other building models. Building Information Models can be exchanged to support decision making about a place. BIM software is always used by government authorities, individuals and businesses that plan, construct, operate and 'maintain the physical structure of infrastructures.

Currently, BIM software are usable by different clients for different projects, or indifferent agencies that plan, design, construct or undertake operation and maintenance of different building services systems, such as the AVMC operations, energy-saving, lighting control, maintenance operation and planning, energy efficiency monitoring, and communication utilities to different types of buildings, offices, residential apartments, and the mall.

Currently, the internal data transfer and computer use in BIM development and sharing has come of age to mature, and as such, the usage of BIM in construction has a worldwide popularity across major cities and towns undertaking constructions, including Hong Kong. 1.1 Aims and Objectives This dissertation aims to explore the new generation, as well as the effect building construction using BIM. This transformation in the construction industry ranges from building design, planning and construction, and further extents to operation and maintenance.

This dissertation investigates from a different perspective the effect of BIM in construction, especially in relation to the timing, cost, effectiveness, as well as the revolutionalization of the construction industry. It further explores how the usage of BIM is running today in the city of Hong Kong 1.1.0 Research Questions The chief research questions are as follows: Why is BIM use preferred in construction industry? What are the advantages and disadvantages of BIM application in construction industry?

How widespread is BIM application in Hong Kong`s construction industry? How is BIM used as a visualization tool? 1.2 Significance of the Study The high and stringent requirements for construction and building services systems, BIM fulfil the request to popularise its usage in Hong Kong. The prevalence of using BIM in the city and country is still low, with the major users of the software being large main contractors, as well as the Hong Kong government, who in some cases try to operate BIM in building constructions.

Different research and learning results from projects consider a different view with regards to BIM, and considers this as a suitable and the right path for Hong Kong to take in undertaking its building and construction projects. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW With the introduction of BIM in the construction industry, many firms opt to use the software to carry out various sustainability design and environmental studies, such as ventilation, energy, carbon emission, and green design (Oberlender, 2000, pg. 79). The housing Authority in Hong Kong started piloting BIM since 2005.

They have used BIM for design visualization and increasingly extended further to subsequent stages to advantage the chain of stakeholders in the building cycle, from design to documentation. Through the implementation of BIM in their projects, they have improved on their building by optimizing their designs by improving coordination and reducing construction waste (Crotty, 2012, pg. 67). The set standards, guidelines, and component families are essential for successful BI implementation. They are required for effective model in building, file management and communication between BIM users.

This has enhanced them to facilitate the process they have prepared in-house BIM standards. In this response, they are one of the best construction industries in the globe. Successful cases of using BIM around the world BIM has become as universal as the notion of “green.” In line with the economic situations which have affected the boom in construction industry, BIM has now become the next great hope for the industry. BIM can make a project to continue even when others have been compelled to go slow or, in most cases, remain idle until the hindering financial cloud is eradicated.

Both Turner and Skanska Construction Company that built the lately completed Yankee Stadium in Bronx did embrace BIM. They incorporated BIM in different phases on their project. According to Emmitt (2013) New York Construction lately discussed, with both team members, the challenges and benefits of using 3D modeling on massive projects. As such, New Meadowlands Stadium, which was initially created in 2D, has since been converted to 3D modelling. The final model was done by combining an aerial photo of the site with various partial models.

Moreover, San Francisco’s new 68,000-seat football stadium situated at one site within San Francisco was designed using BIM.
