It is a project management tool for efficient planning of a project. The Gantt chart clearly identifies the concurrent and consecutive activities, as they will be conducted from the beginning to the end. The Gantt chart demonstrates the period that will be taken or the time when a particular activity will be conducted. It shows how some of the activities or milestones will be conducted at the same periods of time while other activities will only be conducted within a specific period of time. Gantt chart is used to illustrate the start and finish dates of the project. It is also used to track particular activities in a project. It helps in assessing the manner through which different activities are supposed to be conducted and the period that a project is supposed to take. In the milestones section, the Gant chart helps in the identification of the required resources. The Gantt chart is useful by anyone who is interested or the project follow-up team in understanding the details to identify the order in which the tasks will be completed. For this project, the Gantt chart is used by students to plan and schedule the particular project in order to be time conscious when conducting different activities and to ensure that all activities are conducted in the right order and within the planned time. Task 2 Project: Designing cruise ships to mееt раssеngеr safety rеquirеmеnts in the еvеnt of a еvасuаtiоn; ship evacuation conducted at Station Pier in Melbourne Project brief/ overview: During the events where ships have got into trouble requiring the passengers and crew to be evacuated, it is necessary to ensure that the cruise ships are designed well in a manner that enhance quick and efficient evacuation practice. The design of cruise ships is supposed to be done to meet the rigorous standards for structuring, mechanical installations, electrical installations, propulsion, and stability (Wang, Liu, Lo, and Gao, 2014, 428). To deliver a successful project, the project management team will identify the appropriate tools, techniques and to communicate to the stakeholders about all the project issues. Companies designing cruise ships have been experiencing challenges associated with inability of the ships to enhance effective evacuation practice. The crew wishes to offer clear, safe, and effective services to the passengers especially during the evacuation practice. This marks the need of having a proper design of the cruise ships. The ship crew has been facing complications associated in offering efficient evacuation services because of poor designing of the cruise ship. The management of Station Pier in Melbourne looks for a better way of enhancing effective evacuation process by designing cruise ships and identifying how the large ocean going liners will be allocated some particular safety equipments like the safety devices and net to give warning during the movement. Project Objectives; Ship evacuation project would focus at improving and sustaining the design of the cruise ships and improving passenger safety during the evacuation process. There is also enhancement of cruise ship inspection during the construction process (Ottomann, Hartmann, and Antonic, 2016, 1305). The project will focus on enhancing safe ship evacuation through identification and application of efficient ways of making the evacuation practice faster. Aims; The aim of designing the cruise ships is for the Station Pier in Melbourne to meet the interests and requirements of the users. It is also aimed at having enough space for mustering of the passengers in the ships. Additionally, the Station Pier in Melbourne aims at offering quality and effective services to the passengers by designing cruise ships that have the ability to enhance evacuation. Success criteria/ Outcomes; The cruise ship-design project is expected to be successful at enhancing construction and design of ships that will ease the practice of evacuation. The cruise ship design will also enhance and improve passenger understanding on what to do during the evacuation process. The project will be effective after a short period for quick provision of effective service to the passengers. The stakeholders of this project are; the management team of the ship construction corporation, staff, and the passengers. In addition, the management team in Station Pier in Melbourne has commissioned this project to review the success of provision of services to the passengers and ensure their safety during evacuation. There is the improvement of the relationship between the passengers and the crew because of improved passenger safety and satisfaction by having self-services and mustering in the public rooms (Wang, Liu, Lo, and Gao, 2014, 430). The project will be successful in improving evacuation practice by allowing passengers to wear their lifejackets and directing them to the embarkation desk. The improved design will enhance improved communication to avoid passengers’ confusion or getting lost when trying to arrive at the right cruise ships. The practice of designing the cruise ship for evacuation will focus on making every boat’s muster station to be supplied in collaboration with a defibrillator and a first aid pack. It will focus in having lifeboats that carry around 150 passengers as per the requirements of Life Saving Appliances (LAS) code 2010 (Quan-mi, Sheng, Yu, and Mao, 2015, 15). This project would enable the Station Pier in Melbourne understand how to design its cruise ships in a way that would make the passenger evacuation process effective. Through this project, it would be possible for Station Pier in Melbourne to acquire the appropriate safety equipments and enable preparation of the passengers and the crew in the cases of emergency requiring evacuation. Station Pier in Melbourne will be able to win trust of many clients because of its improved safety measures. The company will operate as per the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) safety requirements (Molland, 2011, 5). The Station Pier’s customers require having clarity of their safety when travelling in the company’s ships especially in the events needing evacuation practice. For example, the life jackets needs to be stowed in the boat’s muster location, but with a consideration if it is necessary for the passengers to put on the lifejackets while inside the lifeboats. They also wish to have simplicity of moving inside the ship (Gibson, Papathanassis, and Milde, 2011, 7). Additionally, the passengers will require having cruise ships that are designed with some stairways and they needs to be spacious enough to enhance the movement of intense travel with the ability to enhance urgent passage of the wheelchairs (Hwang, 2013, 240). It is clear that passengers have different needs and interests when travelling, thus the need for construction of a cruise ship in a manner that allows the visitors meet their interests. For example, the double hulls are necessary for the protection of the passengers’ lives. The design will meet the above user requirements by ensuring that the directions are clear and with ability to allow construction of cruise ships for safe evacuation. This will enable the passengers to get satisfaction from the offered service. The newly designed cruise ship will allow the user to take the appropriate safety measures (Molland, 2011, 17). Moreover, the project will allow lifesavers to spend minimal time in the evacuation process. Designing of cruise ship for safe evacuation process will be accompanied with some impacts. Station Pier expects to acquire the some positive response from the passengers after having applied the cruise ships in the evacuation practice. The passengers are expected to contribute in the safe evacuation process. The tourists are expected to be on the right place at the right time because of effective evacuation practice (Ottomann, Hartmann, and Antonic, 2016, 1308). Proper and visible guidance will be made available to the passengers while traveling or when beginning their journey. All the resources necessary for the design of the cruise ship for evacuation will be made available. During the practice of designing for evacuation, the engineers would be hired to construct the cruise ship and put all the requirements. Proposed evaluation methods; The cruise ship has to be assessed to understand if it meets the requirements. The cruise ship would be assessed to ensure that it meets the security and stability measures. For instance, in the US, the US Coast Guard is supposed to verify that the safety systems and alarm systems are addressed. During the release of the cruise ship to start carrying passengers, issuance of certification should be conducted with consideration of the safety requirements (Hwang, 2013, 242). Updating of the safety requirements as per the information acquired from the maritime experts. In order to understand its suitability, the evaluation method that will be applied for a given period of time. There will be reviewing of the plans by the independent inspectors or the ship’s designated classification society prior to the construction practice (Quan-mi, Sheng, Yu, and Mao, 2015, 15). The cruise ship is expected to enhance effectiveness of safe evacuation, thus the need for assessing of its effectiveness and success through the museum visitors. This will also enhance evaluation of the interaction between the customers and the lifesavers during the evacuation process. The method will also allow a test for having a good standard, learnability, efficiency, readability, maintainability, as well as accessibility (Gibson, Papathanassis, and Milde, 2011, 7). The company will also conduct a survey in the area where passengers will be required to stay while waiting for their evacuation. This is where the design will be tested for usability by looking at is ability to enhance efficiency and user-friendliness in the entire interface through the survey results (Molland, 2011, 23). There will also be observation of customers; reliance on the space to take the appropriate precautions. The ability of passengers to follow all the directions given in relation to safe evacuation will show the level of user experience. The user experience will also be assessed by trying to understand how the crew and passengers feel and how they find it being easy to conduct the evacuation practice. The maritime experts will conduct assessment of the ability to designed cruise ship to meet the safe evacuation requirements. References Gibson, P., Papathanassis, A. and Milde, P., 2011.
