1.0 Brief Description of the Project: In the recent years there has been some deliberate attempts in Bambui towards ensuring that there clean supply of water. These attempts however, has not managed to contain water problems that is being faced by the community as the pressure on water resources available for use has been increasing continuously as a result of rapid increase in population growth and the impact of climate change. The end result of these is that the community lack suffient supply of water to satisfy their needs. The major source of water that is used in Bambui consists of 12 springs and a stream feeding into the Tubah watershed. Due to the increase in water demand there has been utilization of secondary spring to supplement water supply more so during the dry season. The current operation is that the two water sources are channeled into a storage tank from which the water is then directed to public and private system serving the Bambui community. The factors that have led to there being insufficient supply of water is not majorly as a result of there being limited resources of water. The stream and stream are able to spply enough water tobe used by he community the year round, but the real problem is seen as being to do with water quality and management of the water resources. There has been alarming increase in human contamination where waste from dumpsites make way to water streams in addition to the contribution of the farming practices which does not help the situation. Bambui water quality is being degraded through livestock grazing activities, the slash and burn type of farming, contaminationresulting from commercial and enterprise activities, deforestation and erosion. Due to all these contributing factors it has made it a big challenge for Bambui Water Authority (BAWA) to be in a position to supply the required quality of water through sufficient filtration and treatment of the water supply. The manner in which that water resources are being put into use is another emerging issue, where the current situation is that there is no any conservation measures that have been put in place and this makes a lot of water to go to waste. This means that even increasing water supply will come with an equal increase in the level of wastage unless something is done. Project objective This project is design to solve part of the water problem in Bambui community. Particularly the project will involve design of the water pumping system that will is able to full fill the water demand of the community. Project Scope In order to have a water system that is adequate it will require that the limitation of the current system to be evaluated so as to be able to know the sizing that is required. The water demand will be projected in future such that the system should be able to deliver enough water in a least 10 years to come. Limitation of the project While water supply has many problems including wastage at house hold level and contamination of the water sources, this project will be restricted to design of the water system particularly the pumping system. Problem analysis The design pumping system should be able to harness water from the lower altitudes. The current system in Bambui is strictly non-mechanized and gravity dependant. Having no mechanized pumping system has put a significant limit to the watershed area that can make useful contribution in terms of the water that can be collected for use. Development a water system that is affordable and which will make it possible for the community to be able to access the main stream supply from lower areas is very important towards addressing the water supply shortage in the community. Design criteria The water supply system requires to have a pump that will facilitate conveyance of water from abstraction points to main tanks from where the water is distributed to utilization points. It is important to have a pump that is properly sized with adequate pumping pressure to ensure that water can be pumped to the highest elevation points. The points which are downstream the water sources will still be served by gravity system so as to cut down on the operation costs on supply water to the community. A multi-stage centrifugal pump is an example of a pump that can be installed so as to draw water at the abstraction points to storage tanks (Schueler, T., D. et al. 2007). Incorporation of automatic mechanism which will function in such a way that when water has been drawn from the storage tanks the pump will be activated automatically so that more water is pumped in the storage tanks. The distribution lines are to be buried beneath buried in the soil so as to reduce vandalism. The lines are also are to have shut-off valves which are to be easily (Forasté, J. Alex and Hirschman David. 2010). Incorporation of a cleanout sump that will directed towards a pervious area so as to enable emptying the system when need arises. Benefit to student participant As a student if given a chance to be part of this project I believe there will be a lot of benefits towards my career development but there will be challenges that will be faced in the process. Participating of student in a project of this nature presents an opportunity of applying the theoretical knowledge acquired in class the field level by creating a solution to human problem. Communication barrier is one of the problem that will need to be overcome in implementation of this project where it may be a challenge when it comes to obtaining information from the would be beneficiaries. The cultural values of the community are to be put into consideration. Bambui community has their values which are different from those of the students who are to participated in the project. Being close to members of opposite sex in the public may not be taken in good test among other things. Being in a different climatic set up and operating in field conditions the project members are likely to be exposed to some forms of health hazards including taking untreated water and being exposed to unfavourable including being rained on in the field and extreme temperatures. Even with all these challenges that may be encountered they could be considered as being a good learning opportunity with regards to endurance of tough conditions in the field. Peer and Self-Assessment Process. In the course of project self/peer assessment is an important aspect. This involves both self assessment of the in addition to assessing fellow team members on the basis of their own judgement on the extent of contribution and effort which will have been made by the member. A failure of engaging in some activities is to attach some form of penalty. The assessment is very important as it is to be used as a baseline of reflecting upon the team work skills with regards to the project Being punctual for group meetings is paramount and how this is adhered to will be observed. By this being observed it will be assure way of ensuring that all the discussed issues are received by all members. High quality work is an important component in the success of the project and this is what will be expected from every team member. All members are to be able to avail information to other team members with regards to specific assignment they are given. High accuracy is expected from members when presenting any information to group members and it will be expected from team members to give satisfactory answers whenever that is needed from other team members Members who will prove helpful to other team members will earn scores from the same. Team members will be required to be good custodians of allocated resources. In this project resources like cameras and vehicles will be put into use all of which will be in the hands of team members. Team members are to be highly disciplined as this contributes a lot to the success of any project (Ancona, 1990). Team members are expected to be respectful and to be tactical in order to obtain information required by the team members. References Ancona, D. G. (1990).
