Learning Guide: Removing & Replacing a Carburetor Student Name Student Number Course Name 1 Abstract The learning guide herein relates to the process of removing and replacing a carburetor. The materials listed are aimed at facilitating the learning process. The venue allows for training of a group using slides. The lesson equips the trainees with practical skills that ensure they will be able to perform the process safely and without interfering with the working of the carburetor or the engine itself. The basic theory contained in the guide is to give the learners the working principle of carburetor. The assessment at the end allows the trainer to evaluate the extent to which the skills have been internalized by the learners. 2 Table of Contents 3 The Package The learning guide herein intends to equip the trainees with practical skills about how to handle the carburetor with specific reference to how to remove and have it fixed back. The guide does not specialize on a particular model of a vehicle nor a specific design of a carburetor. It intends to provide a generalized formal procedure of the manner in which the process mentioned can be effectively and efficiently undertaken. The process does not require one to be a specialist in mechanical engineering but a simplified process guideline that will be taught in a span of approximately two hours. The emphasis is on the practical aspect though learners will be equipped with the basic theory of how a carburetor operates and the importance of having it removed regularly for cleaning. An assessment will be done at the end to ensure that that the learners have captured the practical skills so taught and that they can be able to apply them in real life situations. It also helps them to gain confidence in what they learn such that they become agents of training willing candidates. The exercise will be conducted by way of PowerPoint presentations. This option has been selected since it enables the learner to use the senses of sight and hearing in learning. The information is therefore likely to stick more than when only the oral presentation was made. The choice also allows for a demonstration of the details as captured in the real exercise. Removing & Replacing a Carburetor 4 Overview of the Package The learning guide gives a step by step account of how to remove a carburetor either for cleaning or replacement with another one. It is meant to equip learners with practical skills on how to undertake the process easily and safely. The gadget is a sensitive one since it supplies the engine with fuel and air the requirement for energy. The energy requirements of the engine vary with the task and the terrain on which the vehicle travels. The carburetor needs to adjust to the changing circumstances by providing the right amount and mixture of the two ingredients. Proper handling of the gadget can determine the speed levels that the driver intends or the road requirements prescribe and it is therefore core to feed users of automobiles of the technicalities of handling the sensitive gadget. A projector – to magnify and direct the slides to a broader slide on white wall so as to allow a bigger group to access the information from one single source (trainer) Source of power - to provide the energy for the computer and the projector and also ensure proper lighting for the room 8 Preparation Details A pen and some writing material to keep record of important steps – these enable the learners to take short notes while the demonstration is run on power point slides. Memorizing the whole process the first time could be a tall order since it entails a total of twelve sequential steps. Following the right procedure not only ensures the proper handling of the gadget but also protects the person handling the process. A user guide for the safety precautions – working with machines or mechanical gadgets require strict adherence to the safety rules and regulations. Fresh learners could be prone to mistakes and it is important that they be familiarized with the details of safety in the exercise. The important points in the user guide will be highlighted during the introduction of the learning process. Some basic theoretical material about Bernoulli’s principle which is the principle behind the working of carburetor 9 Course Design The training guide for the replacement of carburetor has been selected owing to the frequency with which people have to clean and/or replace the important gadget in their traditional cars. The gadget was always a source of headache for all automobile users before the designing of the electronic fuel injection. The process is viewed as technical, sensitive, and probably difficult. But this is not the case. The process needs to be handled with care and most importantly skill which is the reason for writing this report. Creating a learning guide makes the transfer of information more effective and avoids misunderstanding between the trainer and the learner. The preparation details equip the trainee with hint on what to expect from the lesson ahead (Dörnyei 2001). For effective delivery and following the guide need be as brief and clear as possible to ensure that the learner comprehends what he/she is actually going to learn, contribution required and the scope of the lesson. Many of the technical words have not been introduced in the guide. This is deliberate to avoid humiliating or intimidating the learners even before the actual training session (Knapp 2000). The deeper technicalities will be introduced and explained in the actual training so as to clarify their comprehension first hand. 10 Instructions for the Trainees Step 1 – start by removing the air cleaner assembly. Then it would be important to mark the hoses for easy remembrance. Step 2 – all the throttle cables should be removed and marked one by one. This allows reference when replacing. Step 3 - the fuel line fitting should be removed and clothing used to dry off any traces of fuel. Step 4 – softly take off the carburetor. Clean clothing should be placed to cover the intake manifold to prevent some small items dropping into the engine. Step 5 – check the gasket and replace it with a new one if need be Step 6 – check for any vacuum ports and transfer and replace with right ones. Could be new or from an old carburetor that has them right. Step 7 – replace the fuel filler if need be but it is highly recommendable to do it whenever the carburetor is removed. Step 8 – check for any dried fuel lines and replace them with new ones. Step 9 - the coil line is disconnected first followed by the battery. The engine is cranked to allow flushing of the fuel line. The fuel should be inspected for foreign materials or rust. Step 10 – fix the carburetor back using the hands. Then tighten all the bolts mildly (avoid overstretching) and the fix all the vacuum cables. Step 11 – the fuel line fitting is fitted initially using the hand until it gets some grip into its area. Then it is tightened using a spanner. Step 12 – involves making the final adjustments to the re-fixed gadget. The details of how this is done is not part of the procedure of removing and replacing the carburetor but rather a routine process the procedure of which is contained in the service manual of each model of a vehicle. 11 Assessment The essence of the assessment is to ensure that the learners have grasped the order in which the various activities follow one another (Little 1991).
