Philharmonic Hall Project Philharmonic Hall Project Introduction It is vital to ensure that Philharmonic Hall project has embraced current technology and that the management is ready to incorporate all the strategies they are using with the technology (Charvat, 2003). This is because technology will help Philharmonic Hall project to move at faster rates and its implementation will be quite simple. Philharmonic Hall project will succeed when every stake holder puts in his efforts including all the workers. Every person should take their responsibility very seriously without watching how the other people are working. It is very crucial to look for contractors and architects who are highly qualified and have experience (Charvat, 2003). This is because qualified people will ensure that the work is done adequately with no mistakes. For a Philharmonic Hall project to succeed, it is vital to choose competent contractors and architectures. There ought to be a good management schedule in connection to the design of the architectures. This is because every phase will be completed at the right time and no phase will consume the time of the other phases. Proper time management also helps the managers to plan what is required and there is delivery of materials at the appropriate time. This will ensure that delicate materials will not be wasted. When the management schedule is in connection with the architectures design, it is difficult to misuse the resources since every resource is delivered at the right time. It is very crucial for the company to set aside large amounts of funds to ensure the smooth running of the project without hiccups. Insufficient funds will result to slowing down of the process of project implementation and also lead toincomplete implementation of the project. The project will also have to borrow the same amount of money from the bank for security purposes so that the project runs without hitches (Charvat, 2003). This money will assist Philharmonic Hall project to have sufficient funds that will not interfere with the production process. Even though the project is part of my work, am really hoping for it to succeed so that I can be present when it is officially opened. M&E Feasible Options Rooms in the building might have increase in heat from many sources such as solar radiations, people, lights, and equipment. This makes people uncomfortable due to increase in temperature and humidity. Therefore the project needs to install an air conditioning system to ensure comfortable conditions. Air conditioning should be installed within the Liverpool Philharmonic spaces such as the auditorium. Air-conditioning is necessary in this building for the purpose of regulating heat. However, air-conditioning is expensive and should be avoided through other alternatives such as natural ventilations, higher celling, and open windows. Therefore a comparison will be made for the most appropriate air conditioning system. Liverpool philharmonic building will use ventilation as a conditioning system. Ventilation will ensure there is constant supply of oxygen which is vital for human existence. This process will also remove respiratory products such as heat, moisture and carbon dioxide. In addition ventilation will ensure that contaminants such as water vapour, outdoor aerosol pollutants, smells and heat from cooking are removed. Therefore renovation of Liverpool philharmonic will mean that ventilation system needs to be upgraded. There is no need to mechanically ventilate parts of the hall because an air conditioning system will be installed while the rear parts of the building will use natural ventilation around the parameters. The first thing that we must do is to compare and evaluate all feasible options available for ventilation in order to have a successful renovation. This requirement ensures the project to choose from various options, which are feasible in order to progress to the concept design. The four way that can be used to ventilate the building are extract ventilation, balanced ventilation, natural ventilation and kitchen extract ventilation. There will also be installation of a CT circuit far accommodating the # air handling units Condensing boilers are 90% effective. Radiant panels are mor effective than other heat emitters and can effectively heat bigger rooms. Radiators with TRV are used for temperature control and are more effective in heating smaller rooms Hot and cold water Domestic hot water will use hot water generators for serving all sanitary appliances around the building from the boiler room. Cold water storage tank with chlorine together with a booster will be installed for store cold water from the mains and distribute to all sanitary fittings During the short peak season, semi storage hot water generators will cater for the requirements Air conditioning Front of house VAV system with AHU will be installed at the 2nd floor, with only the main rooms with high cooling loads. The existing supply with extract grillers will be used Auditorium VAV system with AHU to be located on extension roof, will be supplied through auditorium roof and extracted through auditorium floor void Extension VAV system with AHU to be located on extension roof to condition the big room. All rooms with extension will use natural ventilation for cooling and fresh air purposes. Front of house Indicates the problems of different zones with different requirements by varying the quantity of air to be supplied. Since it needs high cooling loads then this will be most appropriate but the real issue will be capital cost and space requirement. Auditorium At the high peak season cooling demand of 85kw is required. It is necessary to install a separate AHU to supply the required air Extension It is appropriate to install a separate AHU for supplying the required airthrough a variable air volume system. Offices can use natural cooling ventilation Ventilation Through a thorough comparison of different ventilation system the panel has been able to make a decision on strategies that will be used in different zones Toilets In the Philharmonic hall, male and female toilets will have separate ventilation systems in order to evade cross talks between the toilets. PVC duct system will be used to ensure there are flexible routes around parts of the building. Extract ventilation has been used because it removes contaminates caused by humans thus providing a comfortable environment for people. Supply of ventilation and fresh air will be realized by keeping the doors open and installing vents in the door hence natural flow of ventilation. Where applicable natural ventilation will be used to remove air from the toilet through the windows, hence allowing fresh air to come in. it is cheaper to install an extract system on its own with supply coming from air flow through doors and windows instead of installing a supply system. Kitchen Kitchen extract ventilation system will be installed that will contain stainless steel hood over the containment source. This is usually put over the cooker. Extract ventilation system will be separated from all the other ventilation systems. This is because there is massive removal of contaminants. The reason for using kitchen extract ventilation is to avoid contamination of the space by heat, vapours, smoke, steam and smells. Fire Alarm System Philharmonic hall has adopted a fire alarm system that complies with BS5839 regulations since the main reason for this project is to protect life. The control panel must be installed at the entrance of the building at the left side of the foyer. Smoke detectors are installed at different places in the building to ensure maximum safety. These detectors have been installed at the correct places so that maintenance work can be carried out effectively. Electrical sounders have been installed at different parts of the building to ring at 75 db and been positioned so that there is never more than one door or wall separating the sounder. Hot and Cold Water Pumped system will be the most appropriate system for supplying water in Liverpool Philharmonic water. The water tank can be located anywhere most probably in a plant room that can support the tank. The pressure and flow rate demand will vary due to peak and off-peak seasons and this will be catered for through the use of variable controlled pumps. Pipe work in the building will be less thus less work in concealing the pipes within the buildings. Drainage System Philharmonic building will use two pipe drainage system because it is considered to be safer than one pipe system. Fixtures of two pipes are also used in situations where the fixtures are unable to be fited close together. Even though one pipe system is more economical, this is not the primary concern by the client since time and quality are of greater importance. Concept Design Distribution routes The routes of distribution in M&E services within Liverpool Philharmonic hall are divided into 3 zones which are front house, Auditorium and extension. Risers are completely used to ensure services rise and fall where needed. This is witnessed from the drawings services where domestic hot water and low water temperature split from the boiler in the basement. The one lot of pipe go to serve the front house while the other pipe within the plant room goes to serve the extension. Heat specification There is a new LTHW specifications inform of 2pipe flow that ensures circulation system is implemented. The new distribution system will ensure replacement of all pipes, fittings, ancillaries and terminal equipment. Boilers will be installed in the plant room as shown in the drawings. Installation will be put in place in such a manner that it will use lowest temperatures possible so as to achieve heating requirements. The project will put into consideration a temperature difference of 20 to 30 degrees and a flow temperature that will meet the heat requirements. The major aim of the Philharmonic Hall project is to increase productivity capacity of the firm and to ensure that people from local surroundings have been highlyemployed (Charvat, 2003). The project also aims to reduce the production costs so that the company gets sufficient profit from its productions. Philharmonic Hall project also wants to reduce the working hours of the employees to ensure that they have maximum time to rest and that it has employed many employees as possible. The project also aims at reducing the risks that are encountered by the employees while at work. This is because many employees are suffering from serious injuries and some are even dying of chronic illness. The project will also reduce the damping of garbage and sewage to the environment, which is causing environmental degradation. These aims have an intention of increasing the wealth of the shareholders and ensuring that their role is clearly stipulated in the society through social responsibility. This project has many objectives that it wants to accomplish but the major objective is to ensure that the technology is well improved so that the company can compete and survive in the market with other industries (Charvat, 2003). Technology is very beneficial because it has improved the production rate of many companies and it has also reduced the cost of production. It therefore important for the company to embrace this technology so as to ensure it maximizes production. If the company does not embrace this technology it is likely to encounter many losses or even to shut down. This is because it will be unable to deliver the required services and products to the customers. Technology ensures that the company is able to compete with other industries in the market. Technology will ensure that both the stockholders and stakeholders get the required benefits from the firm (Charvat, 2003). The stock holders will have large returns to their investments and there will be better working conditions for the employees. The community will as well have better living standards when the project is implemented. Once the company has implemented technology, there will be numerous developments because many other small businesses will be started in the surrounding. This will increase the employment rates and that there will better standards of living in the community. Justification Philharmonic Hall project will ensure that both the stockholders and stakeholders get the required benefits from the firm. The stock holders will have large returns to their investments and there will be better working conditions for the employees. The community will as well have better living standards when the project is implemented. Once the company has implemented technology, there will be numerous developments because many other small businesses will be started in the surrounding (Charvat, 2003). This will increase the employment rates and that there will better standards of living in the community. Many people from the community will secure jobs from the company because there will be many opportunities when the project will be implemented. People from the community will start their small business to serve people working in the company thus raise their standards of living. Methodology The third chapter of this study focuses on the discussion of the different methodologies that the researcher shall employ in order to attain the goals of this research as well as in answering the research questions enumerated earlier. In general, this study employs a qualitative research, focusing on the descriptive approach. Various data collection methods were also employed in order to reach the necessary conclusions. The methods employed are: Interviews and Case Studies. The importance and link that these have in relation to the research questions and objectives shall be discussed in the following paragraphs. This chapter is intended to observe and analyse the relationship of factors, primarily data gathered from interviewees and secondary sources with respect to the substantial literature supporting Philharmonic Hall. Primary data involve that of individuals who are closely related, engaged and interested in the Philharmonic Hall, as categorized by various levels. The levels are separated as per an individuals intense fondness and knowledge towards the topic, as headed by international and local engineering experts, followed by sporting personalities or athletes and lastly, the fans or the enthusiasts. Due to the specific focus of this study, it shall focus on the social, political and economic aspects as the concrete foundation that established Philharmonic Hall success, in spite of its small population. It aims to identify the factors that demonstrate UK potential as a nation that can support and improve its disembark through Royal Liverpool Philharmonic culture (Charvat, 2003). The study aims to determine specific answers to questions that can support the studys objective. One of which is on what degree can Philharmonic Hall be relied on as a feasible destination for holding cultural events, including both local and international events and games. In addition to this, the study also aim to answer the question whether the Philharmonic Hall has the essential infrastructure that can support cultural events and games on an international setting, inclusive of the economic and political constancy to maintain the cultural heritage not just on a short term basis Data Collection Methods As previously stated, two data collection methods have been used in order to collect related primary information for this research; these are: case studies and interviews. These are discussed in detail below. Case Studies The first method that the researcher employed in this research is the case study method. The case study method as an inquiry which is practical in nature, and which describes an occurrence in the natural setting in which it occurs. In carrying out a case study, different sources of data are made use of. A number of researchers who have made use of this method mention that the use of the data collection is of utmost importance in aiding the researcher as well as his or her audience to understand a complex issue. At the same time, the use of case study as a data collection also enables one to contribute experience and strengths to what has already been established in the field by virtue of the other studies conducted in relation to it (Charvat, 2003). In this study, the research acquired pertinent journals and other relevant materials that could aid the study in looking into the salient factors that make Philharmonic Hall with a sustainable cultural legacy. Interviews Upon obtaining the relevant information from the case studies obtained by the researcher, the latter then makes use of interviews to further collect relevant data. An interview is simply defined as that research technique where the respondents are questioned orally. It is considered very advantageous, especially when dealing with sensitive topics. In this study, the researcher interviewed three important people whom he believes to be of paramount importance in sharing information on the topic at hand. Literature and Review Philharmonic hall is one of the major cultural buildings in Liverpool. It is identified as Grade 11 buildings and is located at canning street conservation area. This building was designed by Liverpool architecture for Royal Liverpool Philharmonic society (Charvat, 2003). The property is in need of extensive renovation and improvement to meet the potential needs of artists and viewers, and to provide sustainable surroundings for the continued success of the company. Taking action to the Society’s Business Plan, four key investment priorities were identified: • Renovation and upgrading of the accommodation so as to uphold attract and convey an outstanding and wide ranging plan of activities. • Provision of a suitable and attractive reception for guests and an efficient service for the needs of viewers. • Ensure that the Liverpool Philharmonic recognises, retains and seeks for funding as well as donor base, and continues to attract investment at a local, regional and international level. • Ensure that the process is well-organized and sustainable. In progress of the scheme design a detailed brief was prepared to convey these objectives. It was also acknowledged that the renovation and upgrade must be approved out in a way that has smallest blow on the historic character of the building. Budget The budget of this project is very heavy because it requires sophisticated facilities and materials. The facilities required to start this project are ranging to about one thousand five hundred dollars. Some of these facilities have to be imported from abroad because they are not manufactured locally. Because they are heavy they have to come in through shipment and this adds the budget because of the transport cost. The transport cost is totalling to approximately one thousand dollars. The labour is also very expensive because it requires both the skilled and non-skilled employees. The professionals include the engineers, accountants and architectures. They are asking for allowances and entertainment money apart from their salary. This is totalling to approximately four thousand dollars. There is money needed in the production of reports by the administrative committee which is totalling to approximately five hundred dollars. The project managers will have to borrow funds from the bank because the project is taking longer than it is expected (Charvat, 2003). This is a result of bad weather conditions which are slowing down the implementation of the project. Professions need to be compensated for their lost time irrespective of the weather conditions.
