Before 1937, there were already precursors that led to the establishment of Toyota as a leading Japanese car manufacturer. In 1924, for example, Sakichi Toyoda, the founder of Toyota, completed the first non-stop shuttle change type Toyoda automatic loom.  In 1929, Kiichiro Toyoda, another founding member of Toyota, travelled to Europe and the United States to investigate automobiles. Several research activities were done until in 1935 when the first A1 prototype passenger automobile car was completed.

Several prototypes were then developed, and in 1936 the first export of Toyota truck was delivered. During the same year, Toyota’s logo was established. A year after the corporation was formally established, in 1938, the famous Japanese inventory system “Just-in-time” was adopted in all its plants. This inventory system has wide contributions to methods of production and manufacturing systems being adopted in modern manufacturing firms. Between the 1940s to the 50s, Toyota established more manufacturing plants throughout Japan.

In 1957, it was able to establish its first offshore sales office in the United States (US). The year preceding 1957 saw Toyota being able to deliver its first export of a Toyota Crown, a passenger car, to the US. A year after, it was able to put up its second offshore office in Brazil, in South America. From the 50s up to the 70s saw many more manufacturing plants and offshore offices being established by Toyota. In the 70s, important milestones were achieved by the now recognized and highly respected Toyota Motor Corporation.

In 1972, it marked the production of its ten millionth vehicle. In 1975, it was able to deliver its five millionth vehicle unit for export. And four years later, in 1979, its cumulative exports of car units reached its ten-millionth mark. In the 80s, Toyota continued to reap success not only in the home market but overseas as well.
